Hemovanadin
Hemovanadin is a pale green vanabin protein found in the blood cells, called vanadocytes, of ascidians (sea squirts) and other organisms (particularly sea organisms). It is one of the few known vanadium-containing proteins. The German chemist Martin Henze first detected vanadium in ascidians (sea squirts) in 1911. Vanabins
Vanabins (also known as vanadium-associated proteins or vanadium chromagen) are a group of vanadium-binding metalloproteins. Vanabins are found almost exclusively in the blood cells, or vanadocytes, of some tunicates (sea squirts), including the Ascidiacea. The vanabins extracted from tunicate vanadocytes are often called hemovanadins. These organisms are able to concentrate vanadium from the surrounding seawater, and vanabin proteins have been involved in collecting and accumulating this metal ion. Friedrich Wolfgang Martin Henze (6 October 1873 – 28 August 1956) was a German chemist. Early life Martin Henze was born the son of the sculptor and university professor Robert Henze (1827-1906). Henze studied in Bern, Leipzig and Heidelberg. Career He worked with Johannes Wislicenus at the University of Leipzig where he received his PhD in 1897. In 1902 he was working at the ''deutsche Zoologische Station Neapel'' Stazione Zoologica Naples Italy together with Anton Dohrn. During this time he published his discovery of a vanadium containing compound in the blood cells of ascidiaceans. He left Italy shortly before World War I but rejoined the Institute in Naples in 1919. He became head of the medical chemistry department of the University of Innsbruck in 1921. Hemocyanins (also spelled haemocyanins and abbreviated Hc) are proteins that transport oxygen throughout the bodies of some invertebrate animals. These metalloproteins contain two copper atoms that reversibly bind a single oxygen molecule (O2). They are second only to hemoglobin in frequency of use as an oxygen transport molecule.
