Gukbap
''Gukbap'' () is a Korean cuisine, Korean dish made by putting cooked rice into hot soup or boiling rice in soup. It is commonly served in a ''ttukbaegi''. Whereas soup and rice is generally eaten separately in Korea, in ''gukbap'', rice is expected to be mixed into the soup. With ''jumaks'', ''gukbap'' became popular especially in the late Joseon period. Origin The first record of ''gukbap'' in literature is in the "Journal of Royal Secretariat" (Seungjeongwon ilgi, ''Seungjeongwon Ilgi''). The journal stated that female physicians recommended the dish to Sukjong of Joseon, King Sukjong due to its heartiness. During the Joseon period, gukbaps were served in ''jumaks'', taverns for merchants. As ''jumaks'' began to develop along roadside areas, gukbap was given the name ''janggukbap'': ''gukbap'' sold in ''jangsi'' (markets). Ttukbaegi
A ''ttukbaegi'' () is a type of '' oji-gureut'', which is an ''onggi'' coated with brown-tone ash glaze. The small, black to brown earthenware vessel is a cookware/ serveware used for various '' jjigae'' (stew), '' gukbap'' (soup with rice), or other boiled dishes in Korean cuisine. As a ''ttukbaegi'' retains heat and does not cool off as soon as removed from the stove, stews and soups in ''ttukbaegi'' usually arrive at the table at a bubbling boil. History The ''ttukbaegi'' dates from the Goryeo Dynasty and has been widely used from the Joseon Dynasty up to the present day. In the Goryeo-period poem of Lee Dal-chung (), the phrase "White ''makgeolli'' is brought to the ''ttukbaegi''" indicates the existence and common use of ''ttukbaegi''. ''Bap'' () is a Korean name for cooked rice prepared by boiling rice or other grains, such as black rice, barley, sorghum, various millets, and beans, until the water has cooked away. Special ingredients such as vegetables, seafood, and meat can also be added to create different kinds of ''bap''. In the past, except for the socially wealthy class, people used to eat mixed grain rice together with beans and barley rather than only rice. Gim Hongdo
Kim Hong-do (, 1745–) was a Korean painter during the Joseon dynasty. He is mostly remembered for his depictions of the everyday life of ordinary people, in a manner analogous to painters of the Dutch Golden Age. He was also widely known by his art name Danwon (). Active during the reign of King Yeongjo and King Jeongjo, he made a profound change in Joseon painting style. By boldly introducing Western painting methods that appeared to have been learned through the Qing Dynasty, he introduced a technique that revealed perspective through jokes and contrasts of colors.
