Guido (slang)
''Guido'' (, ) is a North American subculture, slang term, and ethnic slur referring to working-class urban Italian-Americans. The guido stereotype is multi-faceted. More recently, it has come to refer to working-class urban Italian-Americans who conduct themselves in an overtly macho manner or belong to a particular working-class urban Italian-American subculture. The time period in which it obtained the later meaning is not clear, but some sources date it to the 1970s or 1980s. The term is not used in Italy. Etymology The word "guido" is derived from the Italian given name "Guido", originally the Italian version of the French given name Guy. Fishermen of Italian descent were often called "Guidos" in medieval times. Subculture
A subculture is a group of people within a culture, cultural society that differentiates itself from the values of the conservative, standard or dominant culture to which it belongs, often maintaining some of its founding principles. Italian Americans () are Americans who have full or partial Italian ancestry. The largest concentrations of Italian Americans are in the urban Northeast and industrial Midwestern metropolitan areas, with significant communities also residing in many other major U.S. metropolitan areas. Unico National
UNICO National is a service organization of Italian Americans established in Waterbury, Connecticut, in 1922 to "engage in charitable works, support higher education, and perform patriotic deeds". According to its website, it is the "largest Italian American service organization in the USA". At that time of its founding, the trial of anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti was in the news, and many stories fostered a belief that Italian Americans were loyal primarily to their homeland. UNICO was founded by Italians who were denied membership in the local Rotary Club because they were Italian and to show that Italian Americans were loyal to America first and held no allegiance to Italy except through cultural traditions. ''Unico'' is the Italian word for "unique", chosen to represent the one-of-a-kind nature of the organization. ''Jersey Shore'' is an American reality television series that ran on MTV from December 3, 2009, to December 20, 2012. The series follows the lives of eight housemates at a vacation home, for seasons one, three, five, and six on the Shore in Seaside Heights, New Jersey; plus for season two in South Beach, Florida; and for season four in Florence, Italy. The show debuted amid controversy regarding its use of the terms ''guido'' and ''guidette'' and its portrayal of Italian Americans, which some alleged perpetuated stereotypes. It was also criticized by locals who observed that few of the cast members were natives or residents of the area. Bensonhurst is a residential neighborhood in the southwestern section of the New York City borough of Brooklyn.
