Frugal Four
The Frugal Four was the nickname of an informal cooperation among like-minded fiscally conservative European countries, including Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden. It partly evolved as a successor of the New Hanseatic League that was set up to make up for the loss of the like-minded United Kingdom in the European political arena after Brexit. However, it was never founded as a transnational organisation like similar cooperations of countries in the European Union with shared interests. Along with like-minded Germany, the ''Frugal Four'' advocated for EU budget rebates and tight fiscal policies in the eurozone governed by the Stability and Growth Pact, and generally advocated against a large distributive European budget and collective EU debt. The global COVID-19 pandemic arrived in Europe with its first confirmed case in Bordeaux, France, on 24 January 2020, and subsequently spread widely across the continent. Hendrikus Wilhelmus Maria "Dick" Schoof (born 8 March 1957) is a Dutch politician and civil servant serving as the prime minister of the Netherlands of the Schoof cabinet since 2 July 2024. Schoof previously worked as secretary-general of the Ministry of Justice and Security from 2020 to 2024, as director-general of the General Intelligence and Security Service from 2018 to 2020, and as National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism from 2013 to 2018. Christian Stocker (; born 20 March 1960) is an Austrian politician who has been the 29th chancellor of Austria since March 2025. A member of the People's Party (ÖVP), he has been a member of the National Council since 2019 and acting Chair of the People's Party since 5 January 2025. He had previously served as general secretary of the party from September 2022 to January 2025. Corona Bonds
Next Generation EU (NGEU) is a European Commission economic recovery package to support the EU member states to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, in particular those that have been particularly hard hit. It is sometimes styled NextGenerationEU and Next Gen EU, and also called the European Union Recovery Instrument. Agreed in principle by the European Council on 21 July 2020 and adopted on 14 December 2020, the instrument is worth roughly equally split between grants and loans. NGEU will operate from 2021 to 2026, and will be tied to the regular Multiannual Financial Framework#2021–2027 Financial Framework and recovery package, 2021–2027 budget of the EU's Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). Eurobond (eurozone)
Eurobonds or stability bonds were proposed government bonds to be issued in euros jointly by the European Union's 19 eurozone states. The idea was first raised by the Barroso European Commission in 2011 during the 2009–2012 European sovereign debt crisis. Eurobonds would be debt investments whereby an investor loans a certain amount of money, for a certain amount of time, with a certain interest rate, to the eurozone bloc altogether, which then forwards the money to individual governments. The proposal was floated again in 2020 as a potential response to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, leading such debt issue to be dubbed "corona bonds". The gross national income (GNI), previously known as gross national product (GNP), is the total amount of factor incomes earned by the residents of a country.
