Football is the most popular sport in Ethiopia. Although not one of the leading footballing nations in Africa, Ethiopia has produced some outstanding teams at both club and international level as well as some talented individual players. History The Italians were the first to promote the football in Ethiopia, after 1937. No overall Ethiopian championship was played in 1938 and 1939, but there were regional leagues in the provinces of Amhara (capital Gondar), Harar (capital Harar), Scioa (capital Addis Abeba). The "Campo Sportivo "Littorio" was the first football stadium of Addis Abeba: successively it was enlarged in 1940 with tribune and athletic lanes and after WW2 was renamed Addis Ababa Stadium. 1962 African Cup Of Nations
The 1962 African Cup of Nations was the third edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the soccer championship of Africa ( CAF). It was hosted by Ethiopia. Nine countries entered the competition, including the reigning champions Egypt, meaning for the first time a qualification tournament was required. The finals only included four teams. The 1959 African Cup of Nations was the second edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the football championship between the national teams of Africa, organised by the Confederation of African Football ( CAF). It was hosted and won by the United Arab Republic, a sovereign union between Egypt and Syria. Only three teams participated: host team United Arab Republic, Sudan, and Ethiopia. The 1957 African Cup of Nations was the first edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the football championship of Africa ( CAF). Hosted by Sudan, participating teams were Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. Overview South Africa was drawn to play Ethiopia in the semi-finals, but were disqualified due to apartheid.
