Flat-eight Engine
A flat-eight engine, also called a horizontally-opposed eight, is an eight-cylinder piston engine with two banks of four inline cylinders, one on each side of a central crankshaft, 180° apart. In a flat-eight engine, the connecting rods for corresponding pistons from the left and right banks may share a crankshaft journal. A boxer-eight engine is a special case of a flat-eight where each piston's connecting rod has its own journal, and each pair of opposed pistons moves inwards or outwards at the same time. Flat-eight engines have been used in automotive, motorcycle, aircraft, and marine applications. Design The advantages of a flat-eight engine are its minimal length and low centre of mass. Porsche 906
The Porsche 906 or Carrera 6 is a street-legal racing car from Porsche. It was announced in January 1966 and 50 examples were subsequently produced, thus meeting the homologation requirements of the FIA's new Group 4 Sports Car category to the number. The type would also compete in modified form in the Group 6 Sports Prototype class. History Prior to the Porsche 906 was the 904 which achieved many racing victories. At the age of 28, Ferdinand Piëch, the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche was given the important job of being in charge of the development of the new Porsche racing cars. His goal for recreating the 904 to the new 906 was to make it as lightweight as can be. This would mean stripping all of the heavy steel from the body and using unstressed fiberglass instead. Jabiru 5100
The Jabiru 5100 is a lightweight four-stroke horizontally opposed Flat-eight engine, flat-eight air-cooled aircraft engine, manufactured by Jabiru Aircraft. Design and development The engine is direct-drive and is fitted with alternators, Muffler, silencers, vacuum pump drives and dual-ignition systems as standard equipment. It was developed from the Jabiru 2200 and Jabiru 3300, 3300 aeroengines, but whilst these earlier modular-design engines share the same bore and stroke (97.5mm x 74 mm), the 5100 flat-eight shares only the 97.5mm bore, and the stroke is increased from 74mm to 85mm. Continental Tiara Series
The Continental Tiara series are a family of air-cooled, horizontally opposed aircraft engines. Designed and built by Continental Motors/TCM, the Tiara series were commercially unsuccessful, costing the company millions of dollars. Lycoming IO-720
The Lycoming IO-720 engine is a large displacement, horizontally opposed, eight-cylinder aircraft engine featuring four cylinders per side, manufactured by Lycoming Engines. There is no carbureted version of the engine, which would have been designated O-720 and therefore the base model is the IO-720. The IO-720 is the only flat-eight configuration aircraft engine currently in production. The Porsche 908 was a racing car from Porsche, introduced in 1968 to continue the Porsche 906- Porsche 910- Porsche 907 series of models designed by Helmuth Bott (chassis) and Hans Mezger (engine) under the leadership of racing chief Ferdinand Piëch.
