Firethroat
The firethroat (''Calliope pectardens'') also known as David's rubythroat or Père David's orangethroat is a species of passerine bird in the family Muscicapidae, found in western and central parts of China. It breeds in Sichuan, China, and winters primarily in the Indian subcontinent. Its wintering range spans across Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Tibet and Myanmar. Its natural habitat is temperate forests. It is threatened by habitat loss. The first formal description of the firethroat was by the Catholic priest and zoologist Armand David in 1877 who coined the current binomial name ''Calliope pectardens''. Calliope (genus)
''Calliope'' is a genus of passerine birds in the Old World flycatcher family Muscicapidae. The species were previously placed in the genus ''Luscinia''. A large molecular phylogenetic study published in 2010 found that ''Luscinia'' as defined in 2003 by Edward C. Dickinson was not monophyletic. The genus ''Calliope'', with the type species, ''Calliope calliope'', was reinstated to accommodate a well-defined clade. Although the blackthroat (''Calliope obscura'') had not been included in the 2010 phylogenetic analysis, a subsequent study found that the firethroat and the blackthroat were sister species and not colour morphs of the same species as some publications had previously suggested. Armand David
Father Armand David (7 September 1826, Espelette – 10 November 1900, Paris) was a Lazarist missionary Catholic priest as well as a zoologist and a botanist. Several species, such as Père David's deer, are named after him — being French for Father David. Biography Born in Espelette near Bayonne, in the north of Basque Country, in Pyrénées-Atlantiques ''département'' of France, he entered the Congregation of the Mission in 1848, having already displayed great fondness for the natural sciences. Ordained in 1851, he was in 1862 sent to Peking, where he began a collection of material for a museum of natural history, mainly zoological, but in which botany, geology, and palaeontology were also well represented.
