Figure Skating At The 1964 Winter Olympics
Figure skating at the 1964 Winter Olympics took place at the Olympiahalle in Innsbruck, Austria. There were three events contested: men's singles, ladies' singles, and pair skating. On February 15, 1961, the entire United States figure skating team and several family members, coaches, and officials were killed when Sabena Flight 548 crashed in Brussels, Belgium, en route to the World Championships in Prague. The accident caused the cancellation of the 1961 World Championships and necessitated the building of a new American skating program. Although American figure skaters were still too young in 1964 (most were aged 15 or lower), they still managed to win two medals. Manfred Schnelldorfer
Manfred Schnelldorfer (born 2 May 1943) is a German former figure skater. He is the 1964 Olympic champion, the 1964 World champion, and an eight-time German national champion. Personal life Manfred Schnelldorfer was born on 2 May 1943 in Munich, Bavaria, the son of two figure skating coaches. His father had skated in an ice revue but saw its milieu as a harmful influence. Manfred Schnelldorfer studied architecture at TH-München but put his studies on hold for financial reasons. A resident of Munich, he is married and has two children. Career Competitive Schnelldorfer won his first competition at age eight. He was coached by his parents and skated for the Munich ERC club. Alain Calmat
Alain Calmat (born 31 August 1940) is a French former competitive figure skater, surgeon, and politician. He is the 1964 Olympic silver medalist, the 1965 World champion, the 1962–1964 European champion, and the 1958 & 1962–1965 French national champion. Career Calmat attended the Cours Hattemer, a private school. He started skating at the age of nine. He had one of the longest figure skating careers in postwar skating, competing in every European, World, and Olympic competition for twelve years. He won the silver medal at the French Figure Skating Championships in 1954 and would go on to win twelve medals at nationals before retiring: seven silver and five gold. He placed ninth at the 1956 Winter Olympics and won the bronze medal at the 1958 European Championships. Wolfgang Schwarz
Wolfgang Schwarz (born 14 September 1947, in Vienna) is an Austrian former figure skater. He is the 1968 Olympic gold medalist (one of the youngest male figure skating Olympic champions), a two-time (1967–1968) World silver medalist, and three-time (1967–1969) European silver medalist. Prior to the Grenoble Olympics, he had finished second to Austrian teammate Emmerich Danzer multiple times at the World and European Championships. Giordano Abbondati
Giordano Giulio Abbondati (29 May 1948 – 21 April 2005) was an Italian figure skater and seven-time national champion in 1961–66 and 1968. He competed in several European and World Championships in the 1960s, in addition to the 1964 and 1968 Winter Olympic Games, in both of which he placed 14th. Giordano retired from figure skating in 1968 to pursue a career in medicine but continued to be involved in figure skating as an international competition judge for many years. He married fellow judge Hely Rainesalo-Abbondati of Finland in 1974 and moved to Helsinki, Finland. Sepp Schönmetzler (born 24 September 1944 in Etzdorf, Saxony) is a German figure skater, coach, and journalist. He is the 1962 and 1965 German national champion and placed 12th at the 1964 Winter Olympics. He produces the German figure skating magazine ''Eissport-Magazin''. Ralph Borghard
Ralph Borghard (born 17 April 1944) is a German former figure skater who represented East Germany for most of his career. He is the 1963 Blue Swords champion and a three-time East German national champion (1963, 1964, and 1966). His best result at an ISU Championship, sixth, came at the 1966 European Championships. Personal life Ralph Borghard was born 17 April 1944 in Rostock. He became a dentist in Berlin. Career Ralph Borghard represented East Germany and SC Dynamo Berlin for most of his career, coached by Inge Wischnewski. Monty Hoyt
Monty Hoyt (September 13, 1944 in Baltimore, Maryland – October 9, 1997 in Phoenix, Arizona) was an American figure skater. He was the 1962 U.S. national champion, the 1961 Junior national champion, and the 1959 Novice national champion. He represented the United States at the 1964 Winter Olympics, where he placed 10th. After winning the U.S. junior title in 1961, Hoyt had tickets to be on Sabena Flight 548 to attend the World Figure Skating Championships. He cancelled at the last moment, and so was not on the flight when the plane crashed, killing everyone aboard. Hoyt graduated from the University of Denver and was a Marshall scholar at Oxford, graduating in PPE from Corpus Christi College in 1967.
