Fellow Of The Learned Society Of Wales
The Learned Society of Wales () is a national academy, learned society and charity that exists to "celebrate, recognise, preserve, protect and encourage excellence in all of the scholarly disciplines", and to serve the Welsh nation. The Learned Society of Wales is Wales's first and only all-embracing national scholarly academy. A registered charity, it was established and launched on 25 May 2010 at the National Museum of Wales and was granted a Royal Charter in 2015. The society is headquartered in Cardiff. It is an independent, self-governing, pan-disciplinary, bilingual organisation operating throughout Wales, and is a founding member of the Celtic Academies Alliance. The Royal Society, formally The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge, is a learned society and the United Kingdom's national academy of sciences. The society fulfils a number of roles: promoting science and its benefits, recognising excellence in science, supporting outstanding science, providing scientific advice for policy, education and public engagement and fostering international and global co-operation. Howard Thomas (scientist)
Howard Sidney (Sid) Thomas, FWIF, FLSW (1948 - 2022) was a plant scientist at the Welsh Plant Breeding Station and later the University of Aberystwyth, and also a jazz musician and composer. He became Emeritus Professor of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences, University of Aberystwyth. Career Thomas studied at University of Aberystwyth and was later awarded the DSc degree by the same University. He started his career in the 1960s at the Welsh Plant Breeding Station in Aberystwyth, Wales. He worked on breeding improved varieties of forage grasses and grains, including oats and barley. He made use of cytogenetic methods. He also investigated how grass leaves yellowed and died, since prolonging active green leaves would improve their value as forage. He collaborated with other researchers to bring new technologies into the studies. Gwyn Thomas (poet)
Gwyn Thomas, FLSW (2 September 1936 – 13 April 2016) was a Welsh poet and academic. He was the second National Poet of Wales, holding the role between 2006 and 2008. Early life and education Born in Tanygrisiau, Gwynedd, and brought up there and in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Thomas was educated at Ysgol Sir Ffestiniog, University of Wales, Bangor and Jesus College, Oxford; Prof Thomas was Emeritus Professor of Welsh at the University of Wales, Bangor. Career Thomas published 16 volumes of poetry, several volumes of work as a literary and cultural critic and also translated the Mabinogion into English. Meic Stephens
Meic Stephens, FLSW (23 July 1938 – 2 July 2018) was a Welsh literary editor, journalist, translator, and poet. Birth and education Meic Stephens was born on 23 July 1938 in the village of Treforest, near Pontypridd, Glamorgan. He was educated at Pontypridd Boys' Grammar School and then studied at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, graduating in 1961, at the University of Rennes, Brittany, and the University College of North Wales, Bangor, Gwynedd. Career From 1962 to 1966 he taught French at Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire. In Merthyr Tydfil he established the Triskel Press and in 1965 he began the periodical, '' Poetry Wales''. Noel Lloyd
Noel Lloyd , FLSW (26 December 1946 – 7 June 2019) was a Welsh academic, who served as Vice-Chancellor of Aberystwyth University from 2004 to his retirement in 2011. Biography Noel Lloyd began his academic career at the University of Cambridge, moving to Aberystwyth University in 1975 and subsequently becoming Professor of Mathematics, Dean of Science, Pro Vice-Chancellor and, from 1999 to 2004, Registrar and Secretary. He was awarded a CBE in the Birthday Honours List in 2010 for services to Higher Education in Wales. On his retirement in 2011, he was elected to the Learned Society of Wales. He was admitted as an Honorary Member of the Gorsedd in 2012. John Davies (historian)
John Davies (25 April 1938 – 16 February 2015) was a Welsh people, Welsh historian, and a television and radio broadcaster. He attended university at Cardiff and Cambridge and taught Welsh at Aberystwyth. He wrote a number of books on Welsh history, including ''A History of Wales (book), A History of Wales'' (''Hanes Cymru'' in Welsh language, Welsh). Education Davies was born in the Rhondda, Wales, and studied at both Cardiff University, University College, Cardiff, and Trinity College, Cambridge. Life and work Davies was married with four children. In later life he acknowledged that he was bisexual. Sir Emyr Jones Parry FLSW (born 21 September 1947) is a British retired diplomat. He is a former Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations and former UK Permanent Representative on the North Atlantic Council. Education Jones Parry was educated at Gwendraeth Grammar School, and went on to take theoretical physics at University College Cardiff (where he was President of the Students' Union). The University of Wales () is a confederal university based in Cardiff, Wales. Founded by royal charter in 1893 as a federal university with three constituent colleges – Aberystwyth, Bangor and Cardiff – the university was the first university established in Wales, one of the four countries in the United Kingdom.
