Elph.zwölf
''elph.zwölf'' is one of two releases credited purely to ELpH, an alias for the group Coil. This CD was number twelve in the series ''20′ to 2000'', published on the German label Raster-Noton. Background The sparse text on the CD leads to confusion of the 'proper' title. The title of the EP is listed as "Zwölf" performed by ELpH. The name of the single track on the disc is also "Zwölf". However, on the disc itself the track listing is printed as -1. 20'00"- with the text on the cover reading 20' to 2000.December elph.zwölf. The references to Zwölf and December denote the month in which it the disc was recorded (December 31, 1999). The imprint -20'00"- on the disc itself may refer to the actual length of the track rather than being a title. A speculated reason that Coil used their alias band name ELpH for this release, is that the German word for eleven is 'elf', and is a homophone with ELpH, while 'zwölf' means twelve in German, and the CD was the twelfth release of the ... Coil (band)
Coil were an English experimental music group formed in 1982 in London and dissolved in 2005. Initially envisioned as a solo project by musician John Balance (of the band Psychic TV), Coil evolved into a full-time project with the addition of his partner and Psychic TV bandmate Peter Christopherson (formerly of pioneering industrial music group Throbbing Gristle). Coil's work explored themes related to the occult, sexuality, alchemy, and drugs while influencing genres such as gothic rock, neofolk and dark ambient. AllMusic called the group "one of the most beloved, mythologized groups to emerge from the British post-industrial scene." After the release of their 1984 debut EP '' How to Destroy Angels'', Coil joined Some Bizzare Records, through which they released two full-length albums, ''Scatology'' (1985) and '' Horse Rotorvator'' (1986). Raster-Noton
Raster-Noton was a German electronic music record label. It was established in 1999 in Chemnitz, Germany. By the mid 2010s, it had become known as "one of Europe’s most revered and reliable hubs for experimental electronic music, IDM and audio-visual art." Raster-Noton emerged from the fusion of Rastermusik, founded by Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider in 1996, and Noton (''Archiv für Ton und Nichtton''), a sub-label that was run by Carsten Nicolai. The label focused on the overlapping border areas of pop, art, and science, releasing music albums, publications, and installation works focused on rhythmic, minimal electronic music. In 2017, the label split into two entities: Raster, to be run by Bender, and Noton, focusing on Nicolai's output. Experimental Music
Experimental music is a general label for any music or music genre that pushes existing boundaries and genre definitions. Experimental compositional practice is defined broadly by exploratory sensibilities radically opposed to, and questioning of, institutionalized compositional, performing, and aesthetic conventions in music. Brainwashed is a not-for-profit music website supporting eclectic music. Brainwashed features news, reviews, a podcast, hosts websites for many musical artists and record labels, and has organized two music festivals, Brainwaves. Over fifty people contribute to the archives of Brainwashed. Brainwashed also releases music as Brainwashed Recordings. History Brainwashed.com was launched on April 16, 1996 for the purpose of hosting Web sites for various musical artists.
