West Torrens is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. Named after the City of West Torrens (which is so-named because of its location on the River Torrens), it is a 25.1 km² suburban electorate in Adelaide's west. It includes the suburbs and areas of Brooklyn Park, Cowandilla, Flinders Park, Hilton, Hindmarsh, Keswick Terminal, Marleston, Mile End, Mile End South, Netley, Richmond, Thebarton, Torrensville, Underdale and West Richmond, as well as parts of Allenby Gardens, Lockleys, Welland and West Hindmarsh. Tom Koutsantonis
Anastasios "Tom" Koutsantonis (born 23 August 1971) is an Australian politician in the South Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party, representing the seats of West Torrens (2002−current) and Peake (1997−2002) as a Labor member in the South Australian House of Assembly. He served as Treasurer of South Australia and minister for other portfolios in the Weatherill cabinet between 2011 and 2018. Flinders Park is a western suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the City of Charles Sturt. History The suburb is named after explorer Matthew Flinders, with many of its streets bearing the names of famous explorers. Geography Flinders Park is bound by Grange Road to the north, the River Torrens to the south, Findon Rd to the west and Torres Ave and its extension southwards to the River Torrens, on the east. Demographics The 2021 Census by the Australian Bureau of Statistics counted 5,489 persons in Flinders Park on census night. Of these, 50.1% were male and 49.9% were female. Allenby Gardens is a western suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the City of Charles Sturt. History Laid out in 1922, the suburb was briefly advertised as ''Gallipoli Gardens'' before being named Allenby Gardens in honour of the British Field Marshal, Lord Allenby. The first Allenby Gardens Post Office was renamed West Croydon, South Australia on 1 March 1945; on the same day a new office opened within the present boundaries of the suburb. Geography Allenby Gardens is bordered by multiple roads and other points of interest. The suburb itself is separated in two by Grange Road, with the northern end of the suburb being bordered by Port Road and its North-eastern border being East Avenue. Thebarton ( ), formerly Theberton, on Kaurna land, is an inner-western suburb of Adelaide, South Australia in the City of West Torrens. The suburb is bounded by the River Torrens to the north, Port Road and Bonython Park to the east, Kintore Street to the south, and South Road to the west. Richmond is an inner suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located on Kaurna land in the City of West Torrens. Marleston, South Australia
Marleston is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, in the City of West Torrens. Marleston was home to 1,950 people at the 2021 census. The earliest European settler in this area was Donald McLean, who selected Section 50, Hundred of Adelaide, of in 1837, (the area was originally part of Hilton) and with his family ploughed and sowed 20 acres of seed wheat, and in 1838 reaped the first harvest of wheat in South Australia. The McLean property was divided into nine allotmennts of 8.75 acres in the 1860s. John Marles bought allotment 7 in 1874 and subdivided it in 1879. Following World War I, there was a housing boom driven by returned servicemen. Town Planner Charles Reade persuaded several land owners to work together and developed Galway Gardens on garden suburb principles.
