Electoral District Of Ithaca
Ithaca was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1912 to 1986. It mostly covered the inner northwest suburbs of Brisbane, including Red Hill and Paddington. It was named after the Ithaca Creek. Ithaca was at first a safe Labor seat, but was won and retained for the rest of its existence by the Liberal party in the 1960 election. It was the seat of Premier Ned Hanlon from 1926 until his death in 1952. Ithaca was abolished in the redistribution before the 1986 election, and its area mostly taken up by the district of Mount Coot-tha. Ithaca Creek
Ithaca Creek is a waterway in the Enoggera Creek catchment, in the western suburbs of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It arises in the Taylor Range at the Mount Coot-tha forest with two streams, one arising at J C Slaughter Falls, the other and stronger source being Simpson Falls, the western branch. Ithaca Creek runs through the suburbs of Bardon, Ashgrove and Red Hill, where it joins Enoggera Creek. Ithaca Intact, a creek restoration project by Save Our Waterways Now went into its third year mid 2010, backed by Queensland parliamentarians Kate Jones, Member for Ashgrove and then Minister for the Environment, Andrew Fraser, Member for Mount Coot-tha and Queensland Treasurer, as well as local government councillors Geraldine Knapp and David Hinchliffe. John Gilday
John Theophilus Gilday (1874 – 29 August 1937) was a meatworker and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Gilday was born in Ballarat, Victoria, to parents Martin Gilday and his wife Honorah (née Corcoran). He went to Ballarat State School and became a meatworker in New South Wales. An independent politician or non-affiliated politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association. There are numerous reasons why someone may stand for office as an independent. Some politicians have political views that do not align with the platforms of any political party and therefore they choose not to affiliate with them. Col Miller (politician)
Colin John (Col) Miller (28 April 1924 – 4 November 2016) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1966 to 1986, representing the electorate of Ithaca as a Liberal (1966–1984) and as an independent (1984–1986). Early life Miller was born in Brisbane, Queensland, to parents Charles Miller and his wife Ann Jane (née Weathered). He was educated at the Rainworth State School and the Central Technical College. In World War II he was a corporal in the Australian Imperial Force and was assigned to the 2/3 Field Park from 1943 to 1946. He became a painter on leaving the armed forces. A member of the Freemasons, Miller was also a member of the local Lions Club. He was the chairman of the RSL from 1959 until 1966. On 13 June 1949, Miller married Grace Warner Weathered and together had three sons. Bob Windsor (politician)
Robert Levi Windsor (28 November 1896 – 8 April 1988) was a businessman and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Windsor was born in the Central Queensland town of Mackay to parents Levi Windsor and his wife Mary (née Dunn). He went to school in Mackay and took his college degree in engineering at the Brisbane Technical College. In World War I, he was a stretcher bearer in the 15th Field Ambulance 5th Division from 1915 until 1919. He was gassed in 1917 and went AWOL to London in 1919. He joined the Volunteer Defence Corps in World War II for a year. In 1926, he established the RL Windsor & Son Pty Ltd, an engineering company now known as Fibre King. He was also the chairman of Condamine Oil Ltd from 1955 until 1957. His interests were sports specifically, tennis, swimming and motorcycle riding. Pat Hanlon
Patrick Joseph "Pat" Hanlon (19 March 1930 – 30 October 2014) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1956 to 1974, representing the electorates of Ithaca (1956-1960) and Baroona (1960-1974). Hanlon was born in the Brisbane suburb of Paddington, the son of future Premier Ned Hanlon and his wife Elizabeth (née Carver). He was educated at Marist Brothers College Rosalie, Marist College Ashgrove and the University of Queensland, where he graduated in commerce. After leaving university, he worked as a clerk accountant at the Olympic Tyre and Rubber Company from 1951 until his election to parliament in 1956, at the age of 26. In July 1956, the Labor member for his father's old seat of Ithaca, Leonard Eastment, died in office, necessitating a by-election. Hanlon was selected as the new Labor candidate and won the seat.
