Drill Music
Drill is a subgenre of hip hop music that originated in Chicago in the early 2010s. It is sonically similar to the trap music subgenre and lyrically similar to the gangsta rap subgenre. Artists within drill music have been noted for their style of lyricism and association with crime in Chicago. The genre progressed into the American mainstream in 2012 following the success of rappers like Chief Keef, Lil Durk, Lil Reese, Fredo Santana, G Herbo, Lil Bibby, and King Louie who had many local fans and a significant internet presence alongside producer Young Chop. Media attention and the signing of drill musicians to major labels followed. Chief Keef, in particular, is considered the primary progenitor and popularizer of drill music, responsible for bringing it to the mainstream. After the initial momentum from the early 2010s somewhat subsided, Chicago drill had a resurgence in the late 2010s, (c. 2018) with artists such as King Von, Polo G and also with a renewed Lil Durk, also in ...

UK drill music is closely related to road rap, a British style of gangsta rap that became popular in the years prior to the existence of drill. UK drill often exhibits violent language and provocative lyrics, resulting in the genre being cited as a reason for an increase in knife crime in London. Characteristics UK drill has developed a different production style than Chicago drill, taking influence from earlier British genres such as grime and UK garage; in an interview with ''Complex'', Jammer noted that ...

Crime In Chicago
In Chicago, crime has been tracked by the Chicago Police Department's Bureau of Records since the beginning of the 20th century. The city's overall crime rate, especially the violent crime rate, is higher than the US average. Chicago was responsible for nearly half of 2016's increase in homicides in the US, though the nation's crime rates remained near historic lows as of 2016. Overview Chicago saw a major rise in violent crime starting in the late 1960s. Murders in the city peaked in 1974, with 970 murders when the city's population was over three million, resulting in a murder rate of around 29 per 100,000, and again in 1992, with 943 murders when the city had fewer than three million people, resulting in a murder rate of 34 murders per 100,000 citizens. After 1992, the murder count steadily decreased to 415 murders by the mid-2000s, a reductio ...
