Dorkbot
Dorkbot is a group of affiliated organizations worldwide that sponsor grassroots meetings of artists, engineers, designers, scientists, inventors, and anyone else working under the very broad umbrella of electronic art. The dorkbot motto is "people doing strange things with electricity". Started by Douglas Repetto at the Columbia University Computer Music Center in 2000, dorkbot spread around the world, with over 100 chapters either planning or actively holding meetings as of 2010.The current list of chapters, with map, can be seen adorkbot.org In 2012, Dorkbot (malware), a series of viruses with the same name appeared and it caused many of the chapters to disband. Dorkbot (malware)
Dorkbot is a family of malware worms that spreads through instant messaging, USB drives, websites or social media channels like Facebook. ''Code Shikara'' is a computer worm, related to the Dorkbot family, that attacks through social engineering. Particularly prevalent in 2015, Dorkbot-infected systems were variously used to send spam, participate in DDoS attacks, or harvest users' credentials. Functionality Dorkbot’s backdoor functionality allows a remote attacker to exploit infected systems. According to an analysis by Microsoft and Check Point Research, a remote attacker may be able to: *Download and run a file from a specified URL; *Collect login information and passwords through form grabbing, FTP, POP3, or Internet Explorer and Firefox cached login details; or *Block or redirect certain domains and websites (e.g., security sites). Café Scientifique
Café Scientifique currently exists in more than 60 towns and cities across the United Kingdom and world-wide. It was the idea of Duncan Dallas, from Leeds, who was impressed by the Café Philosophique session he saw in France. Café Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. Meetings take place in cafes, bars, restaurants and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context. The British Council has helped popularise Café Scientifique in several countries around the globe. Grassroots
A grassroots movement is one that uses the people in a given district, region or community as the basis for a political or continent movement. Grassroots movements and organizations use collective action from volunteers at the local level to implement change at the local, regional, national, or international levels. Grassroots movements are associated with bottom-up, rather than top-down decision-making, and are sometimes considered more natural or spontaneous than more traditional power structures. Hacker Culture
The hacker culture is a subculture of individuals who enjoy—often in collective effort—the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming the limitations of software systems or electronic hardware (mostly digital electronics), to achieve novel and clever outcomes. The act of engaging in activities (such as programming or other media) in a spirit of playfulness and exploration is termed ''hacking''. Nerd Nite
Nerd Nite is an event usually held at a bar or other public venue where usually two or three presenters share about a topic of personal interest or expertise in a fun-yet-intellectual format while the audience shares a drink. It was started in 2003 by then-graduate student (now East Carolina University professor) Chris Balakrishan at the Midway Cafe in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston. In 2006 Nerd Nite spread to New York City, where Matt Wasowski was tasked with expanding the idea globally. Nerd Nite has been held at more than 100 cities worldwide, including Harare, San Francisco, Wellington, Monrovia, Orlando, Toronto and Madison, Wisconsin.
