Documenta IX
DOCUMENTA IX was the ninth edition of documenta, a quinquennial contemporary art exhibition. It was held between 13 June and 20 September 1992 in Kassel, Germany. Documenta IX Jonathan Borowsky Friedrichsplatz
Documenta (often stylized documenta) is an Art exhibition, exhibition of contemporary art which takes place every five years in Kassel, Germany. Documenta was founded by artist, teacher and curator Arnold Bode in 1955 as part of the Bundesgartenschau (Federal Horticultural Show) which took place in Kassel at that time. It was an attempt to bring Germany up to speed with modern art, both banishing and repressing the cultural darkness of Nazism. This first Documenta featured many artists who are generally considered to have had a significant influence on modern art (such as Pablo Picasso, Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky, Kandinsky). The more recent editions of the event feature artists based across the world, but much of the art is Site-specific art, site-specific. Every Documenta is limited to 100 days of exhibition, which is why it is often referred to as the "museum of 100 days". Documenta is not a selling exhibition. Matthew Barney
Matthew Barney (born March 25, 1967) is an American contemporary artist and film director who works in the fields of sculpture, film, photography and drawing. His works explore connections among geography, biology, geology and mythology as well as notable themes of sex, intercourse, and conflict. His early pieces were sculptural installations combined with performance and video. Between 1994 and 2002, he created '' The Cremaster Cycle'', a series of five films described by Jonathan Jones in ''The Guardian'' as "one of the most imaginative and brilliant achievements in the history of avant-garde cinema." Marie José Burki
Marie–José Burki (born 1961) is a Swiss visual artist and educator. She is best known for video art, but also has worked in photography, screen printing, sculpture, and installation art. Her work is interested in exploring the interaction between words and images, the passing of time, and the narrative story. Burki teaches at Beaux-Arts de Paris. She lives between Brussels and Paris. Ricardo Rodríguez Brey (born November 9, 1955) is a Cubans, Cuban conceptual artist, sculptor, installation artist and draftsman. Education From 1970 to 1974, Brey attended La Escuela de Artes Plásticas San Alejandro. In 1974, Brey enrolled at La Escuela Nacional de Arte, a prestigious art school in Havana focused on craft and developing the technical skills of the profession. 1977–1981: early career In 1977, Brey collaborated with Volumen I, a group of young artists committed to artistic experimentation in Cuba, opposed to the socialist-realism artistic mandates of the Cuban Revolution. Louise Joséphine Bourgeois (; 25 December 191131 May 2010) was a French-American artist. Although she is best known for her large-scale sculpture and installation art, Bourgeois was also a prolific painter and printmaker. Jonathan Borofsky
Jonathan Borofsky (born December 24, 1942) is an American sculptor and printmaker who lives and works in Ogunquit, Maine. Early life and education Borofsky was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University in 1964, after which he continued his studies at France's Ecole de Fontainebleau and received his Master of Fine Arts from Yale University in 1966. He lived in Manhattan until a teaching position at the California Institute of the Arts brought him to Los Angeles in 1977. Dara Birnbaum
Dara Nan Birnbaum (October 29, 1946 – May 2, 2025) was an American video and installation artist based in New York City. Birnbaum entered the nascent field of video art in the mid-to-late 1970s, challenging the gendered biases of the period and television’s ever-growing presence within the American household. Her oeuvre primarily addresses ideological and aesthetic features of mass media through the intersection of video art, YouTube and television. She used video to reconstruct television imagery using as materials such archetypal formats as quizzes, soap operas, and sports programmes. The foundation of her work uses techniques which involve the repetition of images and interruption of flow with text and music. She was also well known for having formed part of the feminist art movement that emerged within video art in the mid-1970s. Guillaume Bijl
Guillaume Bijl (19 March 1946 – 14 June 2025) was a Belgian conceptual and an installation artist. He lived and worked in Antwerp. Early life and education Bijl was born in 1946 to a working-class family in Antwerp. The artist's father worked at the local docks and his mother worked for the Bell Telephone Company. A self-taught artist, Bijl came to art as an outsider initially making paintings during the 1960s. Joseph Heinrich Beuys ( ; ; 12 May 1921 – 23 January 1986) was a German artist, teacher, performance artist, and Aesthetics, art theorist whose work reflected concepts of humanism and sociology.
