Diverging Lens
Divergence is a mathematical function that associates a scalar with every point of a vector field. Divergence, divergent, or variants of the word, may also refer to: Mathematics * Divergence (computer science), a computation which does not terminate (or terminates in an exceptional state) * Divergence, the defining property of divergent series; series that do not converge to a finite limit * Divergence, a result of instability of a dynamical system in stability theory Statistics * Divergence (statistics), a measure of dissimilarity between probability measures ** Bregman divergence ** f-divergence, ''f''-divergence ** Jensen–Shannon divergence ** Kullback–Leibler divergence, also known as the "information divergence" in probability theory and information theory ** Rényi's divergence Science * Divergence (eye), the simultaneous outward movement of both eyes away from each other * Divergence (optics), the angle formed between spreading rays of light ** Beam divergence, the ... Divergence
In vector calculus, divergence is a vector operator that operates on a vector field, producing a scalar field giving the rate that the vector field alters the volume in an infinitesimal neighborhood of each point. (In 2D this "volume" refers to area.) More precisely, the divergence at a point is the rate that the flow of the vector field modifies a volume about the point ''in the limit'', as a small volume shrinks down to the point. As an example, consider air as it is heated or cooled. The velocity of the air at each point defines a vector field. While air is heated in a region, it expands in all directions, and thus the velocity field points outward from that region. The divergence of the velocity field in that region would thus have a positive value. While the air is cooled and thus contracting, the divergence of the velocity has a negative value. Physical interpretation of divergence In physical terms, the divergence of a vector field is the extent to which the vector fi ... Genetic Divergence
Genetic divergence is the process in which two or more populations of an ancestral species accumulate independent genetic changes ( mutations) through time, often leading to reproductive isolation and continued mutation even after the populations have become reproductively isolated for some period of time, as there is not any genetic exchange anymore. In some cases, subpopulations cover living in ecologically distinct peripheral environments can exhibit genetic divergence from the remainder of a population, especially where the range of a population is very large (see parapatric speciation). The genetic differences among divergent populations can involve silent mutations (that have no effect on the phenotype) or give rise to significant morphological and/or physiological changes. Genetic divergence will always accompany reproductive isolation, either due to novel adaptations via selection and/or due to genetic drift, and is the principal mechanism underlying speciation. Divergent (novel)
''Divergent'' is the debut novel of American novelist Veronica Roth, published by HarperCollins Children's Books in 2011. The first in the Divergent series, a trilogy of young adult dystopian novels (plus a book of short stories), the novel is set in a post-apocalyptic Chicago, where society defines its citizens by their social and personality-related affiliation with one of five factions. This rigid system has removed the threat of anyone exercising independent will and re-threatening the population's safety. In the story, Beatrice Prior joins the ranks of the Dauntless faction and explores her new identity as "Tris". Underlying the action- and dystopian-focused main plot is a romantic subplot between Tris and "Four", one of her instructors in the Dauntless faction. The novel has been compared to other dystopian young adult books of the 21st century such as ''The Hunger Games'' (2008) and ''The Maze Runner'' (2009) because of its similar themes and target audience.
