Disabled Skiing At The Winter Olympics
Disabled skiing was a demonstration event at the Winter Olympic Games on two occasions, in 1984 and 1988. Afterwards, the Paralympic Games were held in the same location as the Olympics and it was judged that as a demonstration event it was redundant. At the 1984 and 1988 Games, medals were awarded to the top three positions, but these medals were smaller in size and did not contribute to the overall medal count. 1984 Winter Olympics At the 1984 Games in Sarajevo, four events in paralympic alpine skiing were contested, all for men only. Cathy Gentile
Cathy Gentile-Patti is an American para-alpine skier. She represented the United States in alpine skiing at the 1992 Winter Paralympics held in Tignes and Albertville, France. She competed in LW2 events for athletes with a single leg amputation above the knee. She won the silver medal in the women's Downhill LW2 event and the women's giant slalom LW2 event. Early life and education On June 28, 1962, Cathy Gentile was born in Los Angeles, California. When Gentile had bone cancer at the age of nine, her right leg had to be removed. During high school, Gentile was an executive for Amputees in Motion and met people with amputations as an Orthopaedic Hospital volunteer. During the early 1980s, Gentile continued to volunteer with Orthopaedic Hospital and worked at a prosthetics manufacturer. The 1988 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XV Olympic Winter Games () and commonly known as Calgary 1988 were a multi-sport event held from February 13 to 28, 1988, with Calgary, Calgary, Alberta as the main host city. This marks the most recent time that two consecutive Olympic Games were hosted in North America (with the 1984 Summer Olympic Games hosted in Los Angeles, California, United States). Diana Golden (skier)
Diana Golden Brosnihan (née Diana Golden, March 20, 1963 – August 25, 2001) was an American disabled ski racer. After losing a leg to cancer at age 12, she went on to win 10 world and 19 United States championships between 1986, and 1990 as a three-tracker, or one-legged skier. Golden also won an Olympic gold medal in giant slalom at the 1988 Calgary Games, where disabled skiing was a demonstration sport. She participated in alpine skiing at two Winter Paralympic Games, in 1980, and 1988, winning two gold medals in the latter year. After retiring from skiing, cancer returned in 1992, and 1996, with her last bout of cancer resulting in her death in 2001. Demonstration Sport
A demonstration sport, or exhibition sport, is a sport which is played to promote it, rather than as part of standard medal competition. This occurs commonly during the Olympic Games but may also occur at other sporting events. Demonstration sports were officially introduced in the 1924 Summer Olympics, though some scholars consider unofficial sports prior to 1924 to also be demonstrations. Most organizing committees then decided to include at least one demonstration sport at each edition of the Games, usually some typical or popular sport in the host country, like baseball at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and taekwondo at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.
