The Diocese of Visby () is a division of the Church of Sweden consisting of the island of Gotland. Its seat is Visby Cathedral located in the largest town on Gotland, Visby. The Bishop of Visby is also responsible for the episcopal oversight of the Church of Sweden Abroad (SKUT). Gunnar Hultgren
Gunnar Axel Engelbrekt Hultgren (19 February 1902 - 13 February 1991) was a Swedish bishop within the Church of Sweden. He was the Archbishop of Uppsala between 1958 and 1967. Biography Hultgren was enrolled at Uppsala University where he became a theology graduate in 1925, theology licentiate in 1933, and Dr. Theol. in 1940. He became an associate professor of systematic theology in Uppsala in 1940. He became vicar in the Diocese of Härnösand in 1940, Bishop of the Diocese of Visby in 1947 and Bishop of the Diocese of Härnösand in 1951. He was appointed Archbishop in 1958 and resigned as Emeritus in 1967. In church governance, a diocese or bishopric is the ecclesiastical district under the jurisdiction of a bishop. History In the later organization of the Roman Empire, the increasingly subdivided provinces were administratively associated in a larger unit, the diocese (Latin ''dioecesis'', from the Greek term διοίκησις, meaning "administration"). Christianity was given legal status in 313 with the Edict of Milan. Churches began to organize themselves into dioceses based on the civil dioceses, not on the larger regional imperial districts. (; "The National Encyclopedia" in English), abbreviated NE, is a comprehensive contemporary Swedish-language encyclopedia with several hundred thousand articles. It is available both online and via a printed version. History The project was initiated in 1980 when a government committee suggested that negotiations be initiated with various publishers. A loan from the Government of Sweden of 17 million Swedish krona, which was repaid by December 1990, provided funding. In August 1985, in Höganäs became the publisher responsible for the project. The project specifications were for a modern reference work based on a scientific paradigm incorporating gender and environmental issues. Pre-orders for the work were unprecedented; before the first volume was published in December 1989, 54,000 customers had ordered the encyclopedia. List Of Church Ruins On Gotland
There are nineteen known ruined churches on the Swedish island of Gotland, twelve of which lie in Visby, the island's main town. Of these, ten lie within the medieval City wall of Visby, city walls. Three additional church ruins in Visby are known through written sources, but today completely vanished. Gotland began to gradually abandon Norse religion and adopt Christianity during the 11th century. While the earliest church (building), churches were wooden, construction of stone churches began during the 12th century. The church building period was fairly short; in the countryside stone churches were erected between the early 12th and mid-14th centuries, while in Visby the last churches were inaugurated during the 15th century. Thomas Petersson (bishop)
Thomas Ingemar Petersson (born 8 April 1968) is a Swedish prelate who is the former Bishop of Visby. Biography Thomas Petersson was ordained priest in 1992 for the Diocese of Linköping. He worked as a pastor of St. Lawrence's Church, Söderköping between 1993–1995 and as a Stiftsadjunkt in the Diocese of Linköping between 1995 and 2002. He also served as pastor of the Ryds parish in Linköping from 2002 until 2006 and pastor of the Victoriaförsamlingen in Berlin between 2006–2011. In 2011 he was appointed as Dean of Växjö Cathedral and in 2014, in addition to being Dean, he became parish priest of the parish of Växjö, a parish consisting of 8 united churches. On March 5, 2018, he was elected bishop of Visby. He was consecrated bishop by Archbishop Antje Jackelén on June 3 the same year. Sven-Bernhard Fast
Sven-Bernhard Fast (born 30 May 1951 in Oskarshamn) is a Swedish prelate who served as Bishop of Visby from 2011 till 2018. Biography Fast is the son of construction worker Bernhard Fast and teacher Viveca Olsson. After high school studies in Helsingborg and academic studies in Uppsala, he was ordained priest in 1973 for the Diocese of Luleå. He served as Pastor and Counselor in the Lycksele parish from 1973-1980, priest in the Vaksala parish in Uppsala from 1981-1982, Student Priest in Uppsala 1982-1983, Commissioner and Deputy pastor of the Orsa parish in Västerås University from 1984 to 1989, and a pastor of Ål parish from 1989 till 1992. He was a founder and director of the Stiftsgården in Rättvik 1992-2000 and ecumenical administrator at the church office in Uppsala from 2000 to 2003. Lars Anton Anjou
Lars Anton Anjou (18 November 1803 – 13 December 1884) was a Swedish bishop, church historian and politician. Biography Anjou studied at Uppsala University, where he became a Bachelor of Philosophy in 1827, a Master of Philosophy in 1830, a Bachelor of Theology in 1834 and a Doctor of Theology in 1845. He was ordained a priest in 1827. In 1845, Anjou was appointed professor and pastor in the parish of Helga Trefaldighet, and in the parish of Denmark in 1851. In the academic year 1851–1852, he was rector of Uppsala University and was appointed minister of education and ecclesiastical affairs on 9 March 1855 as the successor of Henrik Reuterdahl. Among his achievements in this position is the reform of high school, in which he placed great emphasis on classical languages.
