Dunnichen
Dunnichen (; ) is a small village in Angus, Scotland, situated between Letham and Forfar. It is close to Dunnichen Hill, at which the Battle of Dun Nechtain is popularly believed to have been fought. The church is part of the parish of Letham, Dunnichen and Kirkden. History The name Dunnichen derives from , meaning "fort of Nechtan", though the modern Gaelic form is . During the 18th and early 19th centuries it was the home of George Dempster, the agricultural reformer, author and founder of the neighbouring village of Letham. Many archaeological remains are associated with the village and its environs, including the hillforts on Dunnichen hill and Dunbarrow hill. In the early 19th century, the Dunnichen Stone, a class I Pictish standing stone was unearthed at East Mains of Dunnichen. This is now located at the Meffan Institute at Forfar. Montrose, Angus
Montrose ( ; ) is a town and former royal burgh in Angus, Scotland. Situated north of Dundee and south of Aberdeen, Montrose lies between the mouths of the River North Esk, Angus, North and River South Esk, South Esk rivers. Monikie
Monikie is a village and civil parish in Angus, Scotland, north-east of Dundee. History The village grew from small beginnings as just one of many hamlets. The other large village in the parish is Newbigging. Because of the siting of the Railway Station, provided mainly to service the farming community and latterly, the Farina Mill or Granary, and the former reservoir ponds for Dundee City Council (now Monikie Country Park), the concentration has centred on the area which became Monikie village, mainly as a result of a new house building programme in the 1970s and 1980s. The Scottish violinist and fiddler James Scott Skinner lived in Monikie from 1906 to 1909. It is wrong to think of Monikie as only the village but, as the parish name, it is still relevant in most of the addresses in this rural area, stretching from Hynd Castle in the north, to the coast of the Firth of Tay at the south. Menmuir
Menmuir is a parish in the county of Angus in Scotland. Kirkton of Menmuir consists of only three houses (the Old Schoolhouse, the Manse, the Old Inn) and for this reason is referred to locally as "twa hooses and another yin," but around 250 people live in the area and the community hall is well used. History Neolithic cup and ring marked stones have been found in the area. Bronze Age archaeology has been found nearby, with a short cist burial found a mile to the south-east of the village, containing bones and a flint spearhead, and a bronze axehead found nearby. The Brown Caterthun and the White Caterthun, hillforts dating from the Iron Age, can also be seen nearby. A number of Pictish symbol stones have been found in Menmuir, including a cross-slab and a sculptured stone found in the kirkyard around 1844 when an old wall was demolished, three fragments, found in the grounds of the village Manse in 1943, and another class III fragment reported in 1986.
