Defense Independent Pitching Statistics
In baseball, fielding independent pitching (FIP) (also referred to as defense independent pitching (DIP)) is intended to measure a pitcher's effectiveness based only on statistics that do not involve fielders (except the catcher). These include home runs allowed, strikeouts, hit batters, walks, and, more recently, fly ball percentage, ground ball percentage, and (to a much lesser extent) line drive percentage. By focusing on these statistics and ignoring what happens once a ball is put in play, which – on most plays – the pitcher has little control over, DIP claims to offer a clearer picture of the pitcher's true ability. The most controversial part of DIP is the idea that pitchers have little influence over what happens to balls that are put into play. Plate Appearance
In baseball, a player is credited with a plate appearance (denoted by PA) each time he completes a turn batting. Under Rule 5.04(c) of the Official Baseball Rules, a player completes a turn batting when he is put out or becomes a runner. This happens when he strikes out or is declared out before reaching first base; or when he reaches first base safely or is awarded first base (by a base on balls, hit by pitch, catcher's interference, or obstruction); or when he hits a fair ball which causes a preceding runner to be put out for the third out before he himself is put out or reaches first base safely (''see also'' left on base, fielder's choice, force play). Pitch Quantification
In baseball, pitch quantification is the attempt to describe the quality of a pitch using a single numeric value based on quantifiable aspects of an individual baseball pitch. There are two main kinds of pitch quantification. The first is outcome oriented. This means that the result of a given pitch (i.e., walk, out, home run, etc.) is a component used to calculate the overall numeric value that describes the quality of the pitch. The other kind of pitch quantification does not consider the outcome of a pitch when calculating quality. Rather, it is batter independent. Its quality can be assessed without regard to what the batter does with the pitch. In 2006, PITCHf/x cameras were installed in every MLB stadium. Defense-Independent Component ERA
Defense-Independent Component ERA (DICE) is a 21st-century variation on Component ERA, one of an increasing number of baseball sabermetrics that fall under the umbrella of defense independent pitching statistics. DICE was created by Clay Dreslough in 2001. The formula for Defense-Independent Component ERA (DICE) is: : \text =3.00 + \frac In that equation, "HR" is home runs, "BB" is walks, "HBP" is hit batters, "K" is strikeouts, and "IP" is innings pitched. That equation gives a number that is better at predicting a pitcher's ERA in the following year than the pitcher's actual ERA in the current year. Jonah Keri (born September 20, 1974) is a Canadian former journalist, sportswriter, and editor. In 2022, he was incarcerated after pleading guilty to multiple counts of domestic violence offences. Diamond Mind Baseball is a computer baseball simulation game, created by Canadian baseball expert Tom Tippett, who released the first commercial version of the game in 1987. The game can be considered a descendant of dice-and-charts baseball simulations such as Strat-o-Matic baseball and Pursue the Pennant. In fact, in the beginning, the game was called "Pursue The Pennant" because Tippett had a marketing relationship with the company of the same name. This relationship ended in 1995, when the game and company were officially given its current name. Pursue The Pennant itself had been revived in 1993 as a board version, windows version and new online version game called Dynasty League Baseball. Tim Wakefield
Timothy Stephen Wakefield (August 2, 1966 – October 1, 2023) was an American professional baseball knuckleball pitcher. Wakefield began his Major League Baseball (MLB) career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but is most remembered for his 17-year tenure with the Boston Red Sox, from 1995 until his retirement in 2012 as the longest-serving player on the team, earning a total of $55 million. A knuckleball or knuckler is a baseball pitch (baseball), pitch thrown to minimize the spin of the ball in flight, causing an erratic, unpredictable motion.
