Danio
''Danio'' is a genus of small freshwater fish in the family (biology), family Cyprinidae found in South Asia, South and Southeast Asia, commonly kept in aquarium, aquaria. They are generally characterised by a pattern of horizontal stripes, rows of spots or vertical bars. Some species have two pairs of long barbel (anatomy), barbels. Species of this genus consume various small aquatic insects, crustaceans and worms. Taxonomy The name ''"danio"'' comes from the Bengali language, Bangla name ''dhani'', meaning "of the rice field". ''Danio'' was described in the early 19th century by Francis Buchanan-Hamilton, Francis Hamilton. Two of the species included by him in the genus, still remain valid—''D. dangila'' and ''D. rerio''. About a century later (1916) and with many more species described in the meantime, the genus was split; the larger species into ''Danio'' and the smaller species into the genus ''Brachydanio''.Spence, R., Gerlach, G., Lawrence, C. & Smith, C. Celestial Pearl Danio
''Danio margaritatus'', the celestial pearl danio, often referred to in the aquarium trade as galaxy rasbora or ''Microrasbora'' sp. 'Galaxy', is a small freshwater Actinopterygii, ray-finned fish belonging to the Family (biology), family Danionidae. This fish is from Myanmar and Northern Thailand (in Salween basin). It has so far been found only in a very small area near Hopong east of Inle Lake, at an elevation of over 1,000 m (3,400 ft). Its habitat is part of the Salween basin, namely the Nam Lang and Nam Pawn Rivers. Discovered in 2006, the species quickly appeared in the fishkeeping, aquarium trade, where its small size and bright colours made it an instant hit. Description This is a small, plump danionin with a markedly blunt snout, measuring 2–2.5 cm standard length,a few individuals are able to reach 3 cm. The body is about three times as long as it is high. In general shape, it resembles ''Danio erythromicron'' more than any other known species. Th ... Emerald Dwarf Rasbora
''Danio erythromicron'', often known as emerald dwarf danio and emerald dwarf rasbora, is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Danionidae. This fish is endemic to Inle Lake in Myanmar. Taxonomy and systematics In 1999, it was suggested that the species be transferred to the genus ''Danio'' based on morphological data, but it was cautioned that more research would be necessary. A phylogenetic analysis of ''Danio'' found it indeed close to that genus, but its precise placement was still indeterminable. Shortly thereafter, a new species, '' Danio margaritatus'', was described under the name ''Celestichthys margaritatus''. However, this new species was quickly moved into ''Danio'' following further analysis. Subsequent analysis of DNA sequence A nucleic acid sequence is a succession of bases within the nucleotides forming alleles within a DNA (using GACT) or RNA (GACU) molecule. Glowlight Danio
The glowlight danio (''Danio choprae'') is a small, schooling fish closely related to the popular zebrafish ''Danio rerio''. This should not be confused with the GloFish, a trademarked brand of fluorescent zebrafish that appear to glow in the dark under ultraviolet light. ''Danio choprae'' is an active danionin species that spends most of its time on mid-water levels. This species feeds on insects that have fallen into the water, aquatic insect larvae, and other small animals. In the aquarium, it accepts most foods offered, including most dry foods. It has a streamlined body marked with a brilliant orange longitudinal band and a series of vertical blue-black bars on the flanks. The fins are edged with yellow. In recent years, it has become quite widely traded as an aquarium fish, but otherwise has no commercial importance. Its common name derives from its similarity to the glowlight tetra, a South American characin only distantly related to this fish. They get on well with all ...
