Alcide D'Orbigny
Alcide Charles Victor Marie Dessalines d'Orbigny (6 September 1802 – 30 June 1857) was a French naturalist who made major contributions in many areas, including zoology (including malacology), palaeontology, geology, archaeology and anthropology. D'Orbigny was born in Couëron ( Loire-Atlantique), the son of a ship's physician and amateur naturalist. The family moved to La Rochelle in 1820, where his interest in natural history was developed while studying the marine fauna and especially the microscopic creatures that he named " foraminiferans". In Paris he became a disciple of the geologist Pierre Louis Antoine Cordier (1777–1861) and Georges Cuvier. All his life, he would follow the theory of Cuvier and stay opposed to Lamarckism. Henri D'Orbigny
Henri-Joseph d'Orbigny (16 May 1845, Paris – 29 June 1915, Paris) was a French architect and entomologist, son of the traveller and paleontologist Alcide d'Orbigny (1802-1857). From 1864 he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he was a pupil of Honoré Daumet (1826-1911). As an architect he built the Musée d'Orbigny-Bernon in La Rochelle. From 1887 to 1889, he was a member of the ''Société des amis des monuments parisiens''. From the age of 50, he devoted his time to entomology, researching beetles, in particular scarab beetles. His best known written work was ''Synopsis des Onthophagides d'Afrique'' (1913), published in the ''Annales de la Société Entomologique de France''. D'Orbigny meteorite was found near Buenos Aires, Argentina in September 1979. It is the largest angrite found to date.
