Coronadite Group
Coronadite is the lead endmember of the coronadite group, a family of tectomanganates with a 2 × 2 tunnel structure. The mineral was named after Francisco Vasquez de Coronado who was an explorer of southwest US. The name was made up by Waldemar Lindgren in 1905. It is chemically related to ferricoronadite, an analogue, as well as cryptomelane, hollandite Hollandite (chemical formula: Ba(Mn4+6Mn3+2)O16) is a manganese oxide mineral. Its structure consists of double chains of MnO6 octahedra delimiting 2 × 2 tunnels. Waldemar Lindgren
Waldemar Lindgren (February 14, 1860 – November 3, 1939) was a Swedish-American geologist and a founder of modern economic geology. Life Lindgren was born in Vassmolösa, Kalmar Municipality, Småland, Sweden, the son of Johan and Emma Lindgren. Johan was a judge and member of parliament, Emma the daughter of a clergyman. He attended the Freiberg Mining Academy, Germany, graduating as a mining engineer in 1882. In 1884, Lindgren began a 31-year career with the U.S. Geological Survey, working on ore deposits in the Rocky Mountains. In 1905, he helped found the journal Economic Geology. In 1912, he was appointed head of the Department of Geology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Cryptomelane
Cryptomelane (K(Mn4+,Mn2+)8O16) is the potassium endmember of the hollandite group, a family of tectomanganates with a 2 × 2 tunnel structure. In 1942 the name ''cryptomelane'' was proposed as part of an effort to sort out the manganese oxide minerals referred to as ''psilomelane''. Cryptomelane was identified and defined based on X-ray diffraction studies of samples from Tombstone, Arizona; Deming, New Mexico; Mena, Arkansas; and Philipsburg, Montana. Cryptomelane was approved in 1982 by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA). The type locality is the Tombstone District, Cochise County, Arizona, US. Hollandite
Hollandite (chemical formula: Ba(Mn4+6Mn3+2)O16) is a manganese oxide mineral. Its structure consists of double chains of MnO6 octahedra delimiting 2 × 2 tunnels. The electrostatic charge created by the Mn3+ for Mn4+ substitution is balanced by cations in the tunnels. Their nature determines the mineral species: Ba for hollandite, K for cryptomelane, Pb for coronadite, Sr for strontiomelane, Tl for thalliomelane, and Na for manjiroite.
