Cinereous Finch
The cinereous finch (''Piezorina cinerea'') is a species of South American bird in the tanager family Thraupidae. It is the only member of the genus ''Piezorina''. It is found in arid coastal regions of northern Peru, with a single record, presumably a straying bird, from immediately adjacent Ecuador. Taxonomy The cinereous finch was formally described in 1843 by the French ornithologist Frédéric de Lafresnaye under the binomial name ''Guiraca cinerea''. In the same publication he proposed a new genus ''Piezorina'' with the cinereous finch as the type species. Lafresnaye believed that his specimen had come from the Galápagos Islands, but it does not occur there and in 1930 the American ornithologist Outram Bangs amended the type location to northwest Peru. The genus name combines the Ancient Greek ''piezō'' meaning "to crush" with ''rhinos'' meaning "nose". The specific epithet ''cinerea'' is Latin and means "ash-grey" or "ash-coloured". The slender-billed finch (''Xenospingus concolor'') is a species of bird in the tanager family Thraupidae. It is the only member of the genus ''Xenospingus''. It is restricted to southwest Peru and northern Chile, and inhabits mainly riverine vegetation along coastal valleys. It has been considered endangered due to loss of habitat. Tanager
The tanagers (singular ) comprise the bird family (biology), family Thraupidae, in the order Passeriformes. The family has a Neotropical distribution and is the second-largest family of birds. Frédéric De Lafresnaye
Baron Nöel Frédéric Armand André de Lafresnaye (24 July 1783 – 14 July 1861) was a French ornithologist and collector. Lafresnaye was born into an aristocratic family at Chateau de La Fresnaye in Falaise, Normandy. He took an early interest in natural history, particularly entomology. It was only after acquiring a collection of European birds that he turned his attention to ornithology. Lafresnaye described a number of new bird species, some with Alcide d'Orbigny. He accumulated a collection of over 8,000 bird skins at his home. After his death the collection was purchased by the American collector Henry Bryant and donated to the Boston Natural History Society. It was transferred to the Museum of Comparative Zoology in 1914.
