Bat lau dung laai () is a Hong Kong Cantonese corruption of the Vietnamese phrase ''bắt đầu từ nay'', meaning "from now on" (' = begin, start; ' = "from", ' = "now", ). The phrase was made famous in the 1980s and 1990s in Hong Kong, due to a Vietnamese-language radio public service announcement that was broadcast, nearly hourly, on public radio broadcaster RTHK. Background of the radio announcement The broadcast was first made on 16 August 1988, which announced the government's decision to implement a screening policy that would separate refugees from non-refugees (or boat people with economic motivations). The statement was read by Chung Wai-ming, a well-known RTHK radio personality. The Vietnamese portion of the broadcast was read by a Vietnamese boat person who was about to be repatriated. Hongkongers
Hongkongers (), Hong Kongers, Hong Kong citizens and Hong Kong people are demonyms that refer to a resident of Hong Kong, although they may also refer to others who were born and/or raised in the territory. The earliest inhabitants of Hong Kong were indigenous villagers such as the Punti and Tanka, who inhabited the area prior to British colonization. Soramimi
is a Japanese word that in the context of contemporary Japanese internet meme culture and its related slang is commonly used to refer to humorous homophonic reinterpretation, deliberately interpreting words as other similar-sounding words for comedy (similar to a mondegreen, but done deliberately). The word is more commonly used for its original, literal meaning. The slang usage is derived from the long-running "Soramimi Hour" segment on Japanese comedian Tamori's TV program '' Tamori Club''. Tamori is one of the "big three" television comedians in Japan and is very influential. The segment, in which he and his co-host watch mini-skits based on submissions from fans, began in 1992. In modern Japanese internet culture, soramimi also includes videos with subtitles of humorously misinterpreted subtitles or text transcripts that do the same. ''Headliner'' () was a Hong Kong television program produced by RTHK that airs on RTHK TV 31 which satires current affairs in Hong Kong, mainland China and the rest of the world. It first aired on 4 April 1989. The show contains satirical sketches with self-referential humour, along with segments of news clips paired with music (Cantopop in particular), and content from guest contributors. A radio version of the show was briefly aired during the 1990s. ''Headliner'', being critical of the government of Hong Kong, was suspended indefinitely in May 2020 after the Communications Authority warned the broadcaster for "insulting" the police force in an episode aired on 14 February. ''Enjoy Yourself Tonight'' or ''EYT'' is a popular variety show that was produced in British Hong Kong. It first aired on TVB Jade on 20 November 1967. The show lasted 27 years with its last broadcast on Friday, 7 October 1994. During the 1980s, it was compared with the American ''Saturday Night Live'' as one of the world's longest-running live-shows.
