Breathing Cave
A breathing cave or barometric cave is a rare type of cave in which atmospheric pressure gradients between the inside and outside of a cave cause air to flow in to or out of the cave. The concept of air flowing through a cave is common, but in most caves this airflow is caused by a difference in temperature rather than air pressure; in barometric caves the thermal mechanism inside the cave is not great enough to cause such airflow. The speed of the airflow in barometric caves is directly correlated with the atmospheric pressure difference between the inside and outside of the cave. When the air pressure outside of the cave is higher than that inside the cave air blows into the cave and vice versa; if the air pressures are at equilibrium there is no airflow. In some breathing caves, the airflow can only be meaningfully measured near the entrance. Postojna Cave
Postojna Cave (; ; ) is a long karst cave system near Postojna, southwestern Slovenia. It is the second-longest cave system in the country (following the Migovec System) as well as one of its top tourism sites. The caves were created by the Pivka River. History The cave was first described in the 17th century by the pioneer of study of karst phenomena, Johann Weikhard von Valvasor, although graffiti inside dated to 1213 indicates a much longer history of use. Peștera Vântului
Peștera Vântului (Wind Cave) is the largest cave in Romania, with a length of almost 52 km (total length of passages). It is situated in the Pădurea Craiului Mountains on the left bank of Crișul Repede River in the vicinity of Șuncuiuș village, Bihor County. This cave is closed and only accessible to cavers, but there are works going on to develop it as a show cave. Cave of the Winds is a cave in the Pikes Peak region of Colorado. It is located just west of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Colorado Springs on U.S. Highway 24 (Colorado), U.S. Highway 24, near the Manitou Cliff Dwellings. Tours of the complex of caves are given daily. Cave features By far the most famous section of the Cave of the Winds is the Silent Splendor room. Discovered in 1984, the room contains numerous rare crystalline speleothems including helictites which appear to defy the laws of gravity by growing in strange directions and not being forced down by gravity like many cave formations. However, the room must be sealed off from the general public in order to maintain its delicate environment.
