Boxing In Puerto Rico
The history of the sport of boxing in Puerto Rico is a varied and extensive one. Boxing is a major sport in the Caribbean country, and the sport has produced many champions for the island, both in the amateur and professional ranks, and among men and women fighters. Prestigious boxing publication Ring Magazine has considered Puerto Rico as, pound per pound, the best boxing nation in the world. As of 2023, there were 13 Puerto Ricans inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York, all of them men. Of these, 11 were former boxers, with one being a former referee and one a writer. In December 2023, Ivan Calderon (boxer), Ivan Calderon became the 14th Puerto Rican to be elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame; he was inducted in June 2024. ''The Ring'' (often called ''The Ring'' magazine or ''Ring'' magazine) is an American boxing magazine that was first published in 1922 as a boxing and wrestling magazine. As the sporting legitimacy of professional wrestling came more into question, ''The Ring'' shifted to becoming exclusively a boxing-oriented publication. Young Peter Jackson (April 15, 1912 – April 9, 1979) was an African American boxer active from 1929 to 1939. Born Peter Martin in Los Angeles, California, he renamed himself in honor of the great colored heavyweight champ Peter Jackson and the welterweight contender Peter Jackson. The 5'7" Jackson fought as a lightweight, making his professional debut on August 14, 1929 at the Wilmington Bowl in Wilmington, California, when he knocked out Herb Yales via a knock out in the first round of a scheduled four-round bout. Jackson won the USA California State lightweight title on January 12, 1932, defeating Young Manuel (Manuel Villa I), then won the vacant Pacific Coast Lightweight title on July 25, 1933 by defeating Ah Wing Lee. Herbert Hardwick
Herbert Lewis Hardwick Arroyo (May 2, 1914 – December 27, 1966), also known as "Cocoa Kid", was a Puerto Rican boxer of African descent who fought primarily as a welterweight but also in the middleweight division. Hardwick won the World Colored Championships in both divisions. He was a member of boxing's " Black Murderers' Row" and fought the best boxers of his time. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2012. Early years Hardwick was born in the City of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, to Maria Arroyo, a native of Puerto Rico, and Lewis Hardwick, an African American Merchant Marine. In 1913, his father was on leave and left the island without knowing that Maria was pregnant with his child. It was only upon his return several months later that he found out that he was a father. Dyckman Oval
Dyckman Oval was a sports venue in the Inwood neighborhood of Upper Manhattan in New York City. It was most commonly known as a home for Negro league baseball, but was frequently used for other events, including boxing, cricket, wrestling, football, soccer, amateur baseball, and even ice skating competitions. It existed from about 1915 through 1937. The park was on a roughly triangular block bounded by Nagle Avenue and the elevated tracks of the subway's Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line (northwest, third base); 204th Street (northeast, left field); 10th Avenue (southeast, right field); and Academy Street (southwest, first base). Tony Marino (May 18, 1910 – February 1, 1937) was an American boxer who became the World Bantamweight Champion on June 29, 1936, when he defeated Baltasar Sangchili in a fourteenth-round knockout in New York. Marino had the famous trainer Ray Arcel and managers Reed Brown and Bill Newman. He died on February 1, 1937, of injuries he received from his bout with boxer Carlos Quintana, two days earlier in Brooklyn. On February 3, 1937, the New York State Athletic Commission, citing Marino's death, created the three-knockdown rule.
