Calliphoridae
The Calliphoridae (commonly known as blow flies, blow-flies, carrion flies, bluebottles, greenbottles, or cluster flies) are a family of insects in the order Diptera, with almost 1,900 known species. The maggot larvae, often used as fishing bait, are known as gentles. The family is known to be polyphyletic, but much remains disputed regarding proper treatment of the constituent taxa, some of which are occasionally accorded family status (e.g., Bengaliidae and Helicoboscidae). The name blowfly comes from an older English term for meat that had eggs laid on it, which was said to be flyblown. ''Calliphora'' is a genus of blow flies, also known as bottle flies, found in most parts of the world, with the highest diversity in Australia. The most widespread species in North America area '' Calliphora livida'', '' C. vicina'', and '' C. vomitoria''. ''Calliphora'', meaning "bearer of beauty", was first formally named in 1830 by Jean-Baptiste Robineau-Desvoidy. It is the type genus of the family Calliphoridae. Blue Bottle (chemical Reaction)
The blue bottle experiment is a color-changing redox chemical reaction. An aqueous solution containing glucose, sodium hydroxide, methylene blue is prepared in a closed bottle containing some air. Upon standing, it spontaneously turns from blue to Transparency and translucency, colorless due to reduction of methylene blue by the alkaline glucose solution. However, shaking the bottle oxidizes methylene blue back into its blue form. With further shaking, this color-change cycle can be repeated many times. This experiment is a classic chemistry demonstration that can be used in laboratory courses as a general chemistry experiment to study chemical kinetics and reaction mechanism. The Blue Bottle Coffee House
The Blue Bottle coffee house was one of the first coffee houses in Vienna, Austria. It was founded in 1686 by Polish-Ukrainian Jerzy Franciszek Kulczycki, a hero of the Battle of Vienna. Background According to legend, the Blue Bottle was Vienna's first-ever coffeehouse. The story goes that Kulczycki was the only person to recognize that the sacks of dark-brown beans left behind by the invading Ottoman Turks were coffee beans, and he used these spoils to open up a coffeehouse. However, more recent research shows that the first Viennese coffeehouse actually opened in 1685 (one year prior to the Blue Bottle). Many of the stories about Kulczycki were invented by Gottfried Uhlich in 1783. Bluebottle is an adenoidal squeaky-voiced Boy Scout from East Finchley (the same neighborhood of London where Peter Sellers grew up). He was noted for reading his own stage directions out loud, and was often greeted with a deliberate round of applause from the audience ("Enter Bluebottle wearing string and cardboard pyjamas.
