Begotten (film)
''Begotten'' is a 1989 American experimental film written, produced, edited, shot, and directed by Edmund Elias Merhige. It stars Brian Salsberg, Donna Dempsy, Stephen Charles Barry, and members of Merhige's theatre company, Theatreofmaterial. The film contains no dialogue and employs a style similar in some ways to early silent films. Its enigmatic plot, drawn from elements of various creation myths, opens with the suicide of a godlike figure and the births of Mother Earth and the Son of Earth, who set out on a journey of death and rebirth through a barren landscape. According to art historian Scott MacDonald, the film's allegorical qualities and purposeful ambiguity invite multiple interpretations. ''Star Begotten'' is a 1937 novel by H. G. Wells. It tells the story of a series of men who conjecture upon the possibility of the human race being altered, by genetic modification, by Martians to replace their own dying planet. The first (British) edition of this novel gives the title as two words: ''Star Begotten''. The title is hyphenated in the first U.S. edition: ''Star-Begotten''. The book readdresses the idea of the existence of Martians, which Wells had written about in ''The War of the Worlds'' (1898). The dialogue of ''Star Begotten'' makes brief references to Wells's earlier novel, referring to it as having been written by "Jules Verne, Conan Doyle, one of those fellows". ''Only Begotten Daughter'' is a 1990 fantasy novel by American writer James Morrow, setting the stage for his later '' Godhead Trilogy''. The book shared the 1991 World Fantasy Award with Ellen Kushner's ''Thomas the Rhymer''. It was also nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1990, and both the Locus and John W. Campbell Memorial Awards in 1991. "The Begotten" is the 110th episode of the television series ''Star Trek: Deep Space Nine'', the 12th episode of the fifth season. Set in the 24th century, the series follows the adventures on the Starfleet-managed space station Deep Space Nine near the planet Bajor; later seasons depict a conflict with a hostile alien empire known as the Dominion, ruled by the shapeshifting Changelings. In this episode, Deep Space Nine's security chief Odo, a former Changeling who has been stripped of his shapeshifting abilities by the Dominion, attempts to raise an infant Changeling while contending with the scientist who mistreated him when he was an infant shapeshifter himself; meanwhile Major Kira Nerys gives birth to Keiko and Miles O'Brien's baby. Monogenes (μονογενής) has two primary definitions, "pertaining to being the only one of its kind within a specific relationship" and "pertaining to being the only one of its kind or class, unique in kind". Its Greek meaning is often applied to mean "one of a kind, one and only". ''Monogenēs'' may be used as an adjective. For example, ''monogenēs pais'' means only child, only legitimate child or special child. ''Monogenēs'' may also be used on its own as a noun. For example, ''o monogenēs'' means "the only one", or "the only legitimate child". The word is used in Hebrews 11:17-19 to describe Isaac, the son of Abraham.
