Battle Of Gumista
The March Offensive or the Battle of the Gumista was a battle between Defence Forces of Georgia, Georgian armed forces and Abkhazians, Abkhaz separatists. It was the bloodiest clash of the Abkhaz–Georgian conflict and the War in Abkhazia (1992–1993), War in Abkhazia. It was held on March 15–16, 1993 along of the banks of the Gumista River. Background In early 1993, Abkhazians, Abkhazian separatists controlled half of the autonomous republic of Abkhazia and, after having strengthened their positions after Battle of Gagra, opening the border with Russia, the separatists shifted their focus to capturing Sokhumi, the capital of the region. Gumista River
The Gumista River ( ka, გუმისთა, Abkhaz: Гәымсҭа) is a river in Abkhazia, Georgia. It is formed by the joining of the Eastern and Western Gumista Rivers. It is nourished by snow, rain and underground water. The river flows into the Black Sea. The length of the Gumista is 12 km and the drainage basin is approximately 576 km2. The average annual discharge of the river is 30m³/s. I. Abkhazians
The Abkhazians or Abkhazes are a Northwest Caucasian languages, Northwest Caucasian ethnic group, mainly living in Abkhazia, a disputed region on the northeastern coast of the Black Sea. A large Abkhaz diaspora population resides in Turkey, the origins of which lie in the Caucasian War in the late 19th century. Many Abkhaz also live in other parts of the former Soviet Union, particularly in Russia and Ukraine. Gudauta Assault Group
Gudauta ( ka, გუდაუთა, ; , ''Gwdowtha''; , ''Gudauta'') is a town in Abkhazia, Georgia, and the capital of the eponymous district. It is situated on the Black Sea, 37 km northwest of Sokhumi, the capital of Abkhazia. It is the namesake for the Gudauta Bay. Air Base Gudauta used to be home to a Soviet Air Defence Forces base, Bombora airfield, where the 171st Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment flew Su-15TMs until 1982.
