In cricket, batting is the act or skill of hitting the ball with a bat to score runs and prevent the loss of one's wicket. Any player who is currently batting is, since September 2021, officially referred to as a batter regardless of whether batting is their particular area of expertise. Historically, ''batsman'' and ''batswoman'' were used, and these terms remain in widespread use. Cricket Pitch
A cricket pitch is the rectangular central strip of a cricket field between the two wickets, where most of the action takes place. It is long (1 Chain (unit), chain) and wide. The surface is flat and is normally covered with extremely short grass, but can be completely dry or dusty soil with barely any grass or, in some circumstances (that are rarely seen in high level cricket), made from an artificial material. Over the course of a cricket match, the pitch is not repaired or altered other than in special circumstances - meaning that it will change condition. Any grass on the pitch at the start of the game, for example, may disappear due to wear. Runs (cricket)
In cricket, a run is the unit of scoring. The team with the most runs wins in many versions of the game, and always draws at worst (see result), except for some results decided by the DLS method, which is used in rain-shortened limited-overs games when the two teams have had a different number of opportunities to score runs. One run (known as a " single") is scored when the two batters (the striker and the non-striker) start off positioned at opposite ends of the pitch (which has a length of 22 yards) and then they each arrive safely at the other end of the pitch (i.e. they cross each other without being run out). There is no limit on the number of runs that may be scored off a single delivery, and depending on how long it takes the fielding team to recover the ball, the batters may run more than once. Bat-and-ball Sports
Bat-and-ball games, or safe haven games, are field games played by two opposing teams. Action starts when the defending team throws a ball at a dedicated player of the attacking team, who tries to hit it with a bat and then run between various safe areas in the field to score runs (points). The defending team can use the ball in various ways against the attacking team's players to force them off the field ("get them out") when they are not in safe zones, and thus prevent them from further scoring. The best known modern bat-and-ball games are cricket and baseball, with common roots in the 18th-century games played in England. Virender Sehwag (, born 20 October 1978) is a former Indian cricketer who represented India from 1999 to 2013. Widely regarded as one of the most destructive openers and one of the greatest batsmen of his era, he played for Delhi Capitals in Indian Premier League, IPL and Delhi cricket team, Delhi and Haryana cricket team, Haryana in Indian domestic cricket. Cricket is a sport that generates a variety of statistics. Statistics are recorded for each player during a match, and aggregated over a career. At the professional level, statistics for Test cricket, One Day International (ODI), and first-class cricket are recorded separately. However, since Test matches are a form of first-class cricket, a player's first-class statistics will ''include'' their Test match statistics – but not vice versa. Laws Of Cricket
The ''Laws of Cricket'' is a code that specifies the rules of the game of cricket worldwide. The earliest known code was drafted in 1744. Since 1788, the code has been owned and maintained by the private Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in Lord's Cricket Ground, London. There are currently 42 Laws (always written with a capital "L"), which describe all aspects of how the game is to be played. MCC has re-coded the Laws six times, each with interim revisions that produce more than one edition. The most recent code, the seventh, was released in October 2017; its 3rd edition came into force on 1 October 2022. Formerly cricket's official governing body, the MCC has handed that role to the International Cricket Council (ICC). In cricket, a team's innings ends in one of the following ways. In cases 1 and 2, the team are said to be ''all out'', because they do not have two players available to bat. # All but one of the batsmen are out. # The batting side only has one not-out batsman who is still able to bat (the others are incapacitated through injury, illness or absence; see retirement). # The team batting last scores the required number of runs to win. # The game runs out of time for either side to win, and so finishes as a draw. # The set number of overs (sets of 6 deliveries) have been bowled (in limited overs cricket). # The team's captain declares the innings closed. # The Match Referee decides that one team has forfeited the game. Brian Charles Lara, (born 2 May 1969) is a Trinidadian former international cricketer, widely renowned as one of the greatest Batting (cricket), batsmen of all time. Slip (cricket)
In cricket, a slip fielding positions in cricket, fielder (collectively, a ''slip cordon'' or ''the slips'') is placed behind the Batting (cricket), batsman on the Fielding (cricket)#Off and leg side fields, off side of the field. They are placed with the aim of Caught, catching an Edge (cricket), edged ball which is beyond the wicket-keeper's reach. Many teams employ two or three slips (numbered from the slip fielder closest to the wicket-keeper: first slip, second slip, etc.). A ''floating slip'' is sometimes employed, usually in limited over games, who patrols an area in the slip cordon that would ordinarily be occupied by more than one fielder.
