Adam Ayles
Adam Ayles (1850 – 4 April 1912) was an Arctic explorer who served under George Nares as the Petty Officer of HMS ''Alert'' in the British Arctic Expedition. Ayles was born of an unmarried mother at Marnhull, Dorset. He left school at age twelve and worked on a farm for a few years. He joined the British navy in 1867 and served in fighting in Ethiopia that year. He served on the British Arctic Expedition from 1875 to 1876. He was the one member of the expedition that did not succumb to scurvy, and walked more than 100 miles across the ice to get relief to the others. The Ayles Ice Shelf and Mount Ayles were both named after him. It was noted at the time that he was the only teetotaller on the expedition, and ''Punch'' celebrated his achievement in verse: A health to gallant Adam Ayles, Who o'er the topers still prevails, From scurvy safe and Arctic gales, Through drinking only Adam's Ales. Walter Ayles
Walter Henry Ayles (24 March 1879 – 6 July 1953) was a British Labour Party politician who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for 11 years between 1923 and 1953. Early life Ayles was born in Lambeth into a poor religious family. At age 13 he became an engineering apprentice at the London and South Western Railway. Working in Birmingham he met Bertha Batt from Worle, Somerset, and they married in 1904 in Axbridge. Political career In 1910 Ayles became a full-time organiser for the Independent Labour Party in Bristol. He was elected a Councillor on Bristol City Council for the Easton ward in 1910. In 1913 he joined the committee responsible for running the Port of Bristol and Avonmouth Docks. Ayles was a Methodist lay-preacher and a temperance campaigner. Francis Ayles
Francis Ayles (30 March 1880 – 18 June 1939) was an Australian cricketer and football umpire. Ayles, a batsman, was the captain of Port Melbourne Cricket Club when he was appointed by the Otago Cricket Association as a batting coach in November 1908. He played three first-class matches for Otago as a batsman in 1908–09, scoring 81 runs at an average of 20.25. He opened the batting in Otago's match against Hawke's Bay in January 1909, scoring 47 and putting on 176 for the first wicket with Gillie Wilson. Ayles returned to Melbourne in April 1909. Eric Ayles
Eric Ayles (21 February 1928 – 26 May 1972) was an English professional rugby league footballer who played as a prop forward in the 1940s and 1950s. He played at representative level for Lancashire, and at club level for Belle Vue Rangers, St Helens and Salford. Playing career Ayles started his professional career with Belle Vue Rangers before signing for St Helens in September 1953. In March 1956, he joined Salford on loan, before signing a permanent deal with the club in August 1956 for an estimated fee of £350. Ayles dislocated his shoulder in a match against Workington Town in April 1958, which forced him to retire. Gary Ayles (born September 25, 1964) is a Racecar driver born in the United Kingdom. Ayles raced in the British F3 championship in the late 1980s before making the switch to touring car racing. He competed in the British Touring Car Championship in 1991 driving for Toyota alongside Andy Rouse, and filled in for one race in 1992. He was offered a drive with the factory Peugeot team in the Superturismo series as teammate to Fabrizio Giovanardi. In his three years with the team he finished runner up in the championship in 1992 to the Italian and scored several wins during his time in the series against such names as Gabriele Tarquini, Roberto Ravaglia and Emanuele Pirro. For 1995, he drove for the factory-backed Ferrari Club Italia team in the 1995 BPR Global GT Series, driving a Ferrari F40.
