Astronomy
Astronomy is a natural science that studies celestial objects and the phenomena that occur in the cosmos. It uses mathematics, physics, and chemistry in order to explain their origin and their overall evolution. Objects of interest include planets, natural satellite, moons, stars, nebulae, galaxy, galaxies, meteoroids, asteroids, and comets. Relevant phenomena include supernova explosions, gamma ray bursts, quasars, blazars, pulsars, and cosmic microwave background radiation. More generally, astronomy studies everything that originates beyond atmosphere of Earth, Earth's atmosphere. Cosmology is a branch of astronomy that studies the universe as a whole. Norwegian Astronomical Society
The Norwegian Astronomical Society () is a Norwegian organization active in astronomy research, education and outreach. The society was founded on 25 February 1938 in Oslo and initiated by Svein Rosseland, who also founded the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Oslo. Hans Severin Jelstrup was elected as the first chairman, with Gunnar Randers being deputy chairman and Helmut Ormestad secretary. In 1943, the society launched its periodical, ''Norsk populær-astronomisk tidsskrift''. The first issue had contributions from Svein Rosseland, Hans Severin Jelstrup and Eberhart Jensen among others. Its members are both professional and amateur astronomers. The organization has almost two thousand members. During the 2004 transit of Venus, NAS organized the Norwegian public show. The Italian Amateur Astronomers Union (; ''Unione degli Astrofili Italiani''; UAI), also known as Union of Italian Amateur Astronomers, is an Italian organization active in astronomy research and outreach that was founded in 1967. Its members are both professional and amateur astronomers. Irish Federation Of Astronomical Societies
The Irish Federation of Astronomical Societies (IFAS) is an umbrella group comprising most of the National and Regional Astronomical Societies on the Island of Ireland. History IFAS was formed in October 1999 to provide an umbrella organisation for mutual benefit and co-operation for almost all Irish astronomical clubs and societies on the Island of Ireland, north and south. Since its inception it has formed an on-line community for astronomers though its website. Currently (July 2014) there are over 2,200 registered users from around the world taking part in over 12,000 different topics of astronomical interest. A monthly, sponsored astrophotography competition allows for people to pursue an added interest and better their skills, and perhaps win a prize. Irish Astronomical Society
The Irish Astronomical Society, the oldest astronomy club in Ireland, was founded in D'Olier Street, Dublin on 5 October 1937. The society holds public stargazing events to raise interest in astronomy. Some members bring their telescopes to these events and have been nicknamed ''Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers''. It is also one of the founding organisations of the Irish Federation of Astronomical Societies. Most members are amateur astronomers, with some professionals. Publications ''Orbit'' is published every two months containing articles by members and non-members. ''Sky-High'' is published annually. Both are free to members. The Hellenic Astronomical Society (Hel.A.S.), in Greek Ελληνική Αστρονομική Εταιρεία (ΕΛ.ΑΣ.ΕΤ.), is a scientific non profit society of professional astronomers in Greece. Its formal headquarters are at the Dept. of Physics of the University of Athens. The main goal of the Society is to advance the research in astronomy, astrophysics and space physics, as well as to support all educational astronomical activities. European Association For Astronomy Education
The European Association for Astronomy Education or EAAE is a non-profit European organization for the promotion of science education in general, and of astronomy in particular. The Organization was founded on November 25, 1995, in Athens, as a result of the Declaration of the EU/ESO workshop on Teaching of Astronomy in Europe's Secondary Schools that was held at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Headquarters in Garching in November 1994.
