Asters
''Aster'' is a genus of perennial flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. Its circumscription has been narrowed, and it now encompasses around 170 species, all but one of which are restricted to Eurasia; many species formerly in ''Aster'' are now in other genera of the tribe Astereae. ''Aster amellus'' is the type species of the genus and the family Asteraceae. The name ''Aster'' comes from the Ancient Greek word (), meaning 'star', referring to the shape of the flower head. Many species and a variety of hybrids and varieties are popular as garden plants because of their attractive and colourful flowers. 'Aster' species are used as food plants by the larvae of a number of Lepidoptera species—see list of Lepidoptera that feed on ''Aster''. Asters can grow in all hardiness zones. Circumscription The genus ''Aster'' once contained nearly 600 species in Eurasia and North America, but after morphologic and molecular research on the genus during the 1990s, it was decided tha ... Ionactis
''Ionactis'', common name stiff-leaved asters or ankle-asters, is a small genus of plants belonging to the family Asteraceae. These aster-like plants are endemic to North America (Canada and the United States).Greene, Edward Lee. 1897. Pittonia 3(17C): 245–246 entirely in English One species is widespread across much of the eastern half of the continent, while two others are rare endemics with very restricted ranges (see below). The generic name, ''Ionactis'', is derived from the Greek words "ion," meaning "violet" and "aktis" meaning "ray." This is in allusion to the ray florets, frequently pale purple in this genus. Etymology The specific name ''amellus'' is first used in the Georgics (Book IV, 271–280), a poem of the Latin poet Publius Vergilius Maro (70 BCE – 19 BCE), but the etymology is obscure and uncertain. The English common name derives from the flowers being in bloom during Michaelmas (the Feast of St. Michael the archangel). Description ''Aster amellus'' reaches on average a height of . The stem is erect and branched, the leaves are dark green. The basal leaves are obovate and petiolated, the Glossary of botanical terms, cauline ones are alternate and Sessility (botany), sessile, increasingly narrower and lanceolate. The flowers are lilac. The flowering period extends from July through October. The Hermaphrodite, hermaphroditic flowers are either self-fertilized (autogamy) or pollinated by insects (entomogam ... Almutaster
''Almutaster'' is a North American genus of plants in the family Asteraceae containing the single species ''Almutaster pauciflorus'' (formerly ''Aster pauciflorus''), which is known by the common name alkali marsh aster. It is native to Canada (Northwest Territories and the three Prairie Provinces), the Western United States, and northern and central Mexico (as far south as Tlaxcala). The genus is named for botanist Almut Gitter Jones. ''Almutaster pauciflorus'' grows in wet alkaline and saline soils such as inland salt marshes and salt flats. This is a perennial herb growing a reddish-green glandular stem to heights from 30 to 120 centimeters. The narrow leaves are linear in shape and up to 10 centimeters long. The inflorescence is an open array of flower heads containing white to pale purple ray florets and a center of yellow disc florets. The head is lined with phyllaries covered in tiny white resin glands. The fruit is a hairy cypsela. The inflorescences are a food sourc ... Tripolium Pannonicum
''Tripolium pannonicum'', called sea aster or seashore aster and often known by the synonyms ''Aster tripolium'' or ''Aster pannonicus'', is a flowering plant, native to Eurasia and northern Africa, that is confined in its distribution to salt marshes, estuaries and occasionally to inland salt works. It is a perennial growing up to 50 cm tall with fleshy lanceolate leaves and purple ray florets flowering from July to September. The plants tend to be short-lived and populations need significant new recruitment each year from new seedlings. There are rayed as well as rayless varieties and only the former have long blue or white florets. The rayless form is yellow. The plant flowers well into autumn and hence provides a valuable source of nectar for late-flying butterflies such as painted lady and red admiral. Young leaves of this plant are edible and are collected for consumption on the floodplains of the Dutch province of Zeeland. Sea aster was celebrated as the subject of ... Michaelmas
Michaelmas ( ; also known as the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, the Feast of the Archangels, or the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels) is a Christian festival observed in many Western Christian liturgical calendars on 29 September, and on 8 November in the Eastern Christian traditions. Michaelmas has been one of the four quarter days of the English and Irish financial, judicial, and academic year. In the Christian angelology of some traditions, the Archangel Michael is considered as the greatest of all the angels; being particularly honored for defeating the devil in the war in heaven. History The name Michaelmas comes from a shortening of "Michael's Mass", in the same style as Christmas (Christ's Mass) and Candlemas (Candle Mass, the Mass where traditionally the candles to be used throughout the year would be blessed). During the Middle Ages, Michaelmas was celebrated as a Holy Day of Obligation, but this tradition was abolished in the 18th century. ... Symphyotrichum
''Symphyotrichum'' () is a genus of over 100 species and naturally occurring hybrids of herbaceous annual and perennial plants in the composite family, Asteraceae, most which were formerly treated within the genus '' Aster''. The majority are endemic to North America, but several also occur in the West Indies, Central and South America, as well as one species in eastern Eurasia. Several species have been introduced to Europe as garden specimens, most notably New England aster (''Symphyotrichum novae-angliae'') and New York aster ('' Symphyotrichum novi-belgii''). Description Brouillet, et al. wrote: Taxonomy of ''Symphyotrichum'' is difficult. Species are usually heterophyllous, some strongly so. Individuals in the spring, with basal rosettes, often have leaf shapes quite different from those with cauline leaves seen later in the season. Phyllary shape on first- and later-formed heads may differ. Individuals may vary considerably in plant size and array development depend ... Oligoneuron
''Solidago'' sect. ''Ptarmicoidei'' is a section of flowering plants in the genus ''Solidago''. They are sometimes considered a separate genus: ''Oligoneuron''. Like related species they are known as goldenrods. This section contains seven species of perennial herbs, all native to North America. They are distinguished from other goldenrods by their corymbiform flowerheads, which are flat or rounded in profile and about as broad as tall or broader, for which they are sometimes called flat-topped goldenrods. Species The following seven species are included in ''Solidago'' sect. ''Ptarmicoidei'': *'' Solidago houghtonii'' Torrey & A. Gray – Houghton's goldenrod *'' Solidago nitida'' Torrey & A. Eurybia (plant)
''Eurybia'' is a genus of plants in the family Asteraceae that were previously included in the genus ''Aster (genus), Aster''. Most species are native to North America, although one is also present in northern Eurasia. There are 23 species in the genus, including 1 natural hybrid. The name was first applied by Alexandre de Cassini in 1820. The name is derived from Ancient Greek (), meaning "wide", and (), meaning "few", perhaps in reference to the small number of relatively wide ray florets. Description All species within the genus are perennials that grow from in height. They have rhizomes which can either be long, slender or short and thick or sometimes cormoid, all of which often become woody. The stems can be ascending to erect and are typically simple, though they are in rare cases they branch proximally, i.e. near the point of attachment. They can be glabrous to more or less densely hairy, and are generally eglandular, meaning they lack glands, though they can sometimes ...
