John Askey
John Colin Askey (born 4 November 1964) is an English professional football manager and former player who was most recently the manager of club York City. He is the son of former Port Vale player Colin Askey. Able to play as a winger or as a striker, he had pace and intelligence. A former youth-team player at Port Vale, he joined Macclesfield Town from Milton United in 1984. During his time at the club Macclesfield spent six seasons in the Football League and won the Northern Premier League title in 1986–87, the Football Conference title in 1994–95 and 1996–97, and promotion out of the Third Division in 1997–98. Town also won the Northern Premier League Challenge Cup, Northern Premier League President's Cup, Conference League Cup, Cheshire Senior Cup and Staffordshire Senior Cup. Arthur Askey
Arthur Bowden Askey, (6 June 1900 – 16 November 1982) was an English comedian and actor. Askey was known for his short stature (5' 2", 1.58 m) and distinctive horn-rimmed glasses, and his playful humour incorporating improvisation and catchphrases including "Hello playmates!", "I thank you" (pronounced "Ay-thang-yaw") and "Before your very eyes". Askey achieved prominence in the 1930s in the BBC's first radio comedy series '' Band Waggon'' and subsequently starred in several Gainsborough Pictures comedy films during the Second World War including ''Charley's (Big-Hearted) Aunt'' (1940) and '' The Ghost Train'' (1941). His novelty recordings for His Master's Voice include "The Bee Song" (1938), a lasting part of his act. Colin Askey
Colin Askey (born 3 October 1932) is an English former footballer who played on the right wing. He made a total of 341 league and cup appearances in a 15-year career in the English Football League, scoring 40 goals. His son, John Askey, played for and managed Macclesfield Town. He is most famed for his time at Port Vale, where he scored 23 goals in 217 games between 1949 and 1958. This period was one of the most memorable in the club's history, as the "Valiants" stormed to the Third Division North title and FA Cup semi-finals in 1953–54. Following this he spent four years with Walsall and then two years at Mansfield Town. He won two successive promotions with the "Saddlers" in 1959–60 and 1960–61, and also won promotion out of the Fourth Division with the "Stags" in 1962–63. He then went into non-league football, playing for Wellington Town, Stafford Rangers, Winsford United, Macclesfield Town, and Milton United. Richard Askey
Richard Allen Askey (4 June 1933 – 9 October 2019) was an American mathematician, known for his expertise in the area of special functions. The Askey–Wilson polynomials (introduced by him in 1984 together with James A. Wilson) are on the top level of the (q-)Askey scheme, which organizes orthogonal polynomials of (q-)hypergeometric type into a hierarchy. The Askey–Gasper inequality for Jacobi polynomials is essential in de Brange's famous proof of the Bieberbach conjecture. Askey earned a B.A. at Washington University in 1955, an M.A. at Harvard University in 1956, and a Ph.D. at Princeton University in 1961. After working as an instructor at Washington University (1958–1961) and University of Chicago (1961–1963), he joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1963 as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics. Anthea Shirley Askey (2 March 1933 – 28 February 1999) was an English actress, particularly prominent on television in the 1950s. Anthea Askey was born in Golders Green, north London, to the comedian and actor Arthur Askey, and his wife Elizabeth May Swash. She featured in many television roles alongside her father. Gil Askey
Gilbert Askey (March 9, 1925 – April 9, 2014) was an American jazz trumpeter, composer, producer and musical director who was born in Austin, Texas, and emigrated to Australia in 1988. Personal life Askey was born in Austin, Texas, on March 9, 1925, but left at the age of 17. He completed two years of university on a medical scholarship. In 1980, he married an Australian woman whom he had first met in 1973 and the couple moved to Melbourne, Australia in 1988. Career Askey was considered to be "one of the architects of the legendary Motown sound". Berry Gordy often called Askey "The glue that kept everything together". Askey studied music at the Boston Conservatory of Music and the Harnett School of Music in New York. Thomas Arthur Askey (born October 4, 1974) is an American former professional ice hockey goaltender. He was drafted by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim as their eighth-round pick, #186 overall, in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. Playing career Askey spent four seasons with Ohio State University of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, CCHA from 1992/93 to 1995/96 improving his game every year. In 1996 he joined the Mighty Ducks organisation, playing for their affiliate Baltimore Bandits, sharing the duties in net with Mike Bales. Askey has appeared in 7 National Hockey League, NHL games with the Mighty Ducks. After Guy Hebert went down with an injury on March 8, Askey was called up from Cincinnati to serve as the back up behind Mikhail Shtalenkov for the remainder of the season.
