The Independent Greeks – National Patriotic Alliance (, ''Anexartitoi Ellines'', ANEL) was a national conservative political party in Greece. The party was the junior coalition partner to the Coalition of the Radical Left (Syriza) in the first and second Tsipras governments, from January 2015 until the June 2019 parliamentary election, in which the party did not participate. History The party was created on 24 February 2012 by Panos Kammenos, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for the conservative party New Democracy (ND). Parliamentary elections were held in Greece on Sunday, 6 May 2012 to elect all 300 members to the Hellenic Parliament. June 2012 Greek Legislative Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Greece on Sunday, 17 June 2012, to elect all 300 members to the Hellenic Parliament in accordance with the constitution, after all attempts to form a new government failed following the May elections. If all attempts to form a new government fail, the constitution directs the president to dissolve a newly elected parliament, and then to call for new parliamentary elections within 30 days of the dissolution. The president announced at 16 May the date for the new election, and signed the formal decree to dissolve the parliament and call for the election at 19 May. Panagiotis "Panos" Kammenos (, ; born 12 May 1965) is a Greek politician and the founder of the right-wing party " Independent Greeks", which formed the governing coalition of the Hellenic Parliament with the Syriza Party after Kammenos met with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, on 26 January 2015. He was named Greece's Minister of National Defence on 27 January 2015. He served until 20 August 2015, when the Syriza-ANEL coalition resigned, and continued as a lame duck until 28 August, when he was succeeded by the interim Minister, Ioannis Giangos. Christos Zois (; born 10 May 1968) is a Greek politician. He is currently the leader of NEA MERA, and Deputy Chairman of the Union for the Homeland and the People. He was formerly a Member of the Hellenic Parliament (MP) for New Democracy, but left in 2012 along with ten other New Democracy MPs to found the Independent Greeks. He left the Independent Greeks in 2013 when he founded NEA MERA. From August to September 2015, he served as the Alternate Minister of Shipping in Vassiliki Thanou-Christophilou's caretaker cabinet. Epaminóndas "Nótis" Mariás (; born 5 April 1957) is a Greek political scientist, politician, and Member of the European Parliament (MEP).
