Aldwyn is an Anglo-Saxon saint. The village of Coln St Aldwyn in Gloucestershire is generally supposed to be named after him. In Bede's ''Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum The ''Ecclesiastical History of the English People'' (), written by Bede in about AD 731, is a history of the Christian Churches in England, and of England generally; its main focus is on the growth of Christianity. It was composed in Latin, and ...'', an Aldwyn is mentioned who was abbot of Partney. According to Bede he was the brother of Saint Æthelwine, who became bishop of Lindsey from around 680, and of Æthelhild, abbess of a monastery nearby. There is no indication that this is the saint of Coln, but it is possible. Aldwin was an Anglo-Saxon prior. Originally prior at Winchcombe, he wished to resurrect the monasteries of the Bedeian Northumbrian golden age, and refounded monasteries at Jarrow and Monkwearmouth Monkwearmouth is an area of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear in England. Monkwearmouth is located at the north side of the mouth of the River Wear. It was one of the three original settlements on the banks of the River Wear along with Bishopwearmouth ... in 1073 or 1074, becoming prior; his companion Elfwi took over the position while Aldwin was trying to resurrect a monastic community at Melrose. The monks of the revived Monkwearmouth-Jarrow Abbey were recalled to their mother house at Durham Cathedral Priory on 28 May 1083, and Aldwin was made Durham's first prior. Aldwyn Of Malvern
Great Malvern Priory in Malvern, Worcestershire, England, was a Benedictine monastery (c. 1075 – 1540) and is now an Anglican parish church. In 1949 it was designated a Grade I listed building. It is a dominant building in the Great Malvern Conservation area. It has the largest display of 15th-century stained glass in England, as well as carved misericords from the 15th and 16th century and the largest collection of medieval floor and wall tiles. In 1860 major restoration work was carried out by Sir George Gilbert Scott. It is also the venue for concerts and civic services. History Early history An ancient carved head and shoulders similar to the Lustymore Island figure on Boa Island, County Fermanagh, was excavated from the grounds of the Priory. Aldwin Ware is an American former basketball player who played for Florida A&M from 1983 to 1988 (he redshirted in 1986–87). As a senior in 1987–88, he led the NCAA Division I in steals, with 142. That same season he recorded a 32-point, 11-rebound, 10-assist triple-double against Maryland Eastern Shore and was named to the first-team All-MEAC. Ware was also honored as a Black College All-American in 1987–88. He never played professionally, however, and later worked as a framer for Mark Allen's Homes.
