This page lists characters from the television series ''Firefly''. Major characters Malcolm Reynolds Malcolm Reynolds ("Mal"), played by Nathan Fillion, is owner and captain of the Firefly-class spaceship ''Serenity'', and was a volunteer in the war between the Alliance and the Independents (aka "Browncoats"). He got the name for his spaceship from a famous battle he fought and commanded in, the Battle of Serenity Valley. When asked why he named his ship after a lost battle, Zoe comments "Once you're in Serenity, you never leave. You just learn how to live there." He is fiercely loyal to those he calls his crew. Malcolm's main mission is to keep his crew alive and to keep his ship flying. As ''Firefly'' writer Tim Minear stated in an interview: "It's just about getting by. That's always been the mission statement of what the show is—getting by." In "Serenity", Mal says of himself: " f theWind blows northerly, I go North." Screens from ''Serenity'' suggest that Mal was born o ...

Interpersonal Relationship
In social psychology, an interpersonal relation (or interpersonal relationship) describes a social association, connection, or affiliation between two or more people. It overlaps significantly with the concept of social relations, which are the fundamental unit of analysis within the social sciences. Relations vary in degrees of intimacy, self-disclosure, duration, reciprocity, and power distribution. The main themes or trends of the interpersonal relations are: family, kinship, friendship, love, marriage, business, employment, clubs, neighborhoods, ethical values, support and solidarity. Interpersonal relations may be regulated by law, custom, or mutual agreement, and form the basis of social groups and societies. They appear when people communicate or act with each other within specific social contexts, and they thrive on equitable and reciprocal compromises. Interdisciplinary analysis of relationships draws heavily upon the other social sciences, includin ...

Leigh Hunt
James Henry Leigh Hunt (19 October 178428 August 1859), best known as Leigh Hunt, was an English critic, essayist and poet. Hunt co-founded '' The Examiner'', a leading intellectual journal expounding radical principles. He was the centre of the Hampstead-based group that included William Hazlitt and Charles Lamb, known as the "Hunt circle". Hunt also introduced John Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Robert Browning and Alfred Tennyson to the public. He may be best remembered for being sentenced to prison for two years on charges of libel against the Prince Regent (1813-1815). Hunt's presence at Shelley's funeral on the beach near Viareggio was immortalised in the painting by Louis Édouard Fournier. Hunt inspired aspects of the Harold Skimpole character in Charles Dickens' novel ''Bleak House''. Early life James Henry Leigh Hunt was born on 19 October 1784, at Southgate, London, where his parents had settled after leaving the United States. His father, Isaac, a lawyer ...

Companion Star
A binary star or binary star system is a system of two stars that are gravitationally bound to and in orbit around each other. Binary stars in the night sky that are seen as a single object to the naked eye are often resolved as separate stars using a telescope, in which case they are called ''visual binaries''. Many visual binaries have long orbital periods of several centuries or millennia and therefore have orbits which are uncertain or poorly known. They may also be detected by indirect techniques, such as spectroscopy (''spectroscopic binaries'') or astrometry (''astrometric binaries''). If a binary star happens to orbit in a plane along our line of sight, its components will eclipse and transit each other; these pairs are called ''eclipsing binaries'', or, together with other binaries that change brightness as they orbit, ''photometric binaries''. If components in binary star systems are close enough, they can gravitationally distort each other's outer stellar atmospheres. ...

Sister Show
Sister shows, also known as companion series, are two or more television series which exist in the same fictional universe and which may have crossovers. They differ to a degree from spin-offs, in that they are established independently from one another. The popularity of most series is limited to a few seasons, and sister shows allow expanding the immediate audience and ratings share. This is accomplished by using mostly different actors and production facilities. Sister shows often shift styles or target audience slightly, for a larger overall market. Thus ''The Beverly Hillbillies'' emphasizes slapstick, while '' Green Acres'' emphasizes surreal humor. Examples * ''Arrow'', '' Constantine'', ''The Flash'', '' Black Lightning'', ''Supergirl'', ''Legends of Tomorrow'' and ''Batwoman''. * '' Daredevil'', '' The Punisher'', ''Jessica Jones'', '' Iron Fist'', ''Luke Cage'', and '' The Defenders''. * '' The Real World'' and '' Road Rules'' * '' Band of Brothers'' and '' The Pacific ...

Companion Planting
Companion planting in gardening and agriculture is the planting of different crops in proximity for any of a number of different reasons, including Weed control, weed suppression, pest control, pollination, providing habitat for beneficial insects, maximizing use of space, and to otherwise increase crop productivity. Companion planting is a form of polyculture. Companion planting is used by farmers and gardeners in both industrialized and developing countries for many reasons. Many of the modern principles of companion planting were present many centuries ago in forest gardens in Asia, and thousands of years ago in Mesoamerica. The technique may allow farmers to reduce costly inputs of artificial Fertilizer, fertilisers and pesticides. Traditional practice History Companion planting was practiced in various forms by the indigenous peoples of the Americas prior to the arrival of Europeans. These peoples domesticated Cucurbita pepo, squash 8,000 to 10,000 years ago, then m ...

Companion Matrix
In linear algebra, the Frobenius companion matrix of the monic polynomial p(x)=c_0 + c_1 x + \cdots + c_x^ + x^n is the square matrix defined as C(p)=\begin 0 & 0 & \dots & 0 & -c_0 \\ 1 & 0 & \dots & 0 & -c_1 \\ 0 & 1 & \dots & 0 & -c_2 \\ \vdots & \vdots & \ddots & \vdots & \vdots \\ 0 & 0 & \dots & 1 & -c_ \end. Some authors use the transpose of this matrix, C(p)^T , which is more convenient for some purposes such as linear recurrence relations ( see below). C(p) is defined from the coefficients of p(x), while the characteristic polynomial as well as the minimal polynomial of C(p) are equal to p(x) . In this sense, the matrix C(p) and the polynomial p(x) are "companions". Similarity to companion matrix Any matrix with entries in a field has characteristic polynomial p(x) = \det(xI - A) , which in turn has companion matrix C(p) . These matrices are related as follows. The following statements are equivalent: * ''A'' is similar over ''F'' to C(p) , i.e. ''A ...

Companion Parrot
A companion parrot is a parrot kept as a pet that interacts abundantly with its human counterpart. Generally, most species of parrot can make excellent companions, but must be carefully managed around children and other common pet species like dogs and cats as they might be hostile towards them. Species of parrots that are kept as companions include large parrots, such as Amazon parrot, amazons, Psittacus, greys, cockatoos, Eclectus parrot, eclectuses, Red-fan parrot, hawk-headed parrots, and macaws (including hybrids like the Catalina macaw); mid-sized birds, such as caiques, conures, monk parakeet, Quaker parrots, cockatiels, ''Pionus'', ''Poicephalus'', rose-ringed parakeets, and rosellas; and many of the smaller types, including Budgerigar, budgies, ''Brotogeris'', parakeets, lovebirds, parrotlets and Barred parakeet, lineolated parakeets. Some species of lories and lorikeets are kept as pets but are quite messy, and often more popular as aviary birds. Hanging parrots and fi ...

A companionway may be secured by doors or, commonly in sailboats A sailboat or sailing boat is a boat propelled partly or entirely by sails and is smaller than a sailing ship. Distinctions in what constitutes a sailing boat and ship vary by region and maritime culture. Types Although sailboat terminology ..., ''hatch boards'' which fit in grooves in the companionway frame. This allows the lowest board to be left in place during inclement weather to minimize water infiltration. The term may be more broadly used to describe any ladder between decks.
