Zeppelin-Staaken Riesenflugzeuge
A ''Riesenflugzeug'' (plural ''Riesenflugzeuge'', German for "giant aircraft"), sometimes colloquially referred to in English as an R-plane, was any member of a class of large World War I German bombers, possessing at least three aircraft engines, although usually four or more engines. These large multi-engine aircraft could fly several hours with larger bomb loads than the smaller ''Grossflugzeug'' bombers such as the Gotha G.V. Some of the earliest ''Riesenflugzeuge'' were given G-type designations before being redesignated, but a major distinction was that the requirements for the R-type specified that the engines had to be serviceable in flight. As a result, designs fell into two groups: *those with the engines mounted centrally inside the fuselage using gearboxes and driveshafts to transfer the power to propellers mounted between the wings, and *those with conventional powerplant installations mounted in large nacelles or the nose of the aircraft where engineers would be ...

Junkers Ju 390
The Junkers Ju 390 was a German long-range derivative of the Junkers Ju 290 aircraft, intended to be used as a heavy transport aircraft, maritime patrol aircraft and long-range bomber. It was one of the aircraft designs submitted for the abortive ''Amerikabomber'' project, along with the Messerschmitt Me 264, the Focke-Wulf Ta 400 and the Heinkel He 277.Green 1970, p. 519. Design and development Two prototypes were created by attaching an extra pair of inner-wing segments to the wings of Ju 290 airframes and adding new sections to lengthen the fuselages. The first prototype, V1 (bearing ''Stammkennzeichen'' code of GH+UK), was modified from the Ju 90 V6 airframe (Werknummer J4918, civil registration D-AOKD from July 1940 to April 1941, then to the ''Luftwaffe'' as KH+XC from April 1941 to April 1942, then returned to Junkers and used for Ju 390 V1 construction). It made its maiden flight on 20 October 1943 and performed well, resulting in an order in early 1944 for six more p ...

Siemens-Schuckert Forssman
The Siemens-Schuckert Forssman was a prototype bomber aircraft designed and built in Germany in 1914 and 1915.Haddow & Grosz 1963, p.164 When its performance proved inadequate for its intended role, even after numerous modifications, the German Inspectorate of Flying Troops (the ''Idflieg'') eventually accepted it into service as a trainer. Shortly after its acceptance into military service, the aircraft's fuselage fractured while on the ground, ending its career. The aircraft is sometimes known as the Siemens-Schuckert Forssman R, the "R" alluding to the designation that the ''Idflieg'' assigned to multi-engine aircraft in late 1915.Haddow & Grosz 1963, p.1 However, the Forssman did not meet all the criteria of the "R" designation — for example, its engines were not serviceable in flight — and the "R" designation only came into use after the Forssman was built.Haddow & Grosz 1963, p.172 If the Forssman received any military designation at all, that designation is not no ...

Basse Und Selve
Basse und Selve (BuS) were German manufacturers of engines for automobiles, motorcycles, boats, aircraft and railcars, supplying engines for ''Selve'' cars built at the Selve Automobilwerke AG, but also various other manufacturers of automobiles and commercial vehicles, such as Beckmann, Mannesmann, and Heim. The Altena factory was founded in 1908 by Gustav Selve, employing 2,000 workers, with Dr. Walther von Selve taking over the firm on the death of Gustav Selve, his father. Basse und Selve aero-engines did not make a big impact on the aviation industry in Germany, but did find limited use, particularly in several large aircraft. The largest and most powerful fighter fitted with a Basse & Selve engine was the Hansa-Brandenburg W.34, a single prototype of which was completed before hostilities ceased in 1918. Several large ''Riesenflugzeuge'' were also fitted with Basse & Selve engines, but they were generally replaced with Mercedes or Maybach alternatives as soon as possibl ...

Mannesmann Giant Triplane
The Mannesmann Giant Triplane (also called Poll Triplane) was a giant German triplane designed and constructed during the final months of World War I. The Mannesmann Triplane was at an advanced stage of completion when the Armistice was signed. Design The Mannesmann Triplane was to be a giant triplane with the middle wing spanning and the upper and lower wings spanning . The fuselage, measuring long, was rectangular in cross-section and was of plywood construction. The wheels would have measured in diameter. Power was to be supplied by ten engines mounted in tandem in five nacelles, one above the lower wing below the fuselage and four at strut intersections on the middle wing. Only the middle wing would be fitted with ailerons.Haddow, G.W.; Grosz, Peter M. (1962). ''The German Giants, The Story of the R-planes 1914–1919''. London: Putnam. Development The Mannesmann Triplane was conceived in 1917 as a long-range transport by Villehad Forssman, who had designed the SSW-Forssm ...

Junkers R
Junkers Flugzeug- und Motorenwerke AG (JFM, earlier JCO or JKO in World War I, English: Junkers Aircraft and Motor Works) more commonly Junkers , was a major German aircraft and aircraft engine manufacturer. It was founded in Dessau, Germany, in 1895 by Hugo Junkers, initially manufacturing boilers and radiators. During World War I and following the war, the company became famous for its pioneering all-metal aircraft.
