Zach's Ceremony
''Zach's Ceremony'' is an Australian coming of age documentary film. It looks at the transition to adulthood from an indigenous cultural perspective. It features Zach Doomadgee and his father Alec Doomadgee. About the film The film looks at what it means to be an indigenous Australian and Zach Doomadgee's cultural journey. Zach who is of indigenous and Caucasian descent is influenced by two cultures. It also looks at how Zach is affected by being one of the few Indigenous children at his Sydney school, being too dark. It also looks at his being too light-skinned when he visits his father's community in far-north Queensland. Alec Doomadgee played a major part in the film in both direction and production. The film was shown at New York's Margaret Mead Film Festival. The film was begun in 2009 when Zach was aged around 10. Alec Doomadgee
Alec Doomadgee is an Australian actor, television host and presenter. He is also an Indigenous Australian community leader, mentor and activist. Background Born and raised on the born and raised with his extended family on the Waanyi / Garawa Land Trust, he is from the Doomadgee community in the Gulf of Carpentaria. He is also a descendant of Waanyi, Garawa and Gangalidda tribes. Involved in Native Title issues, he is also chairman for the Waanyi PBC. Film and television In 2008, he appeared in the short film, ''Joonba'' then later '' Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins''. He also played the role of Wesley, Grace's husband in episode 1. of ''Redfern Now''. He also made another appearance in the series in episode "Starting Over", this time as Koorioke Announcer. The Byron Bay Film Festival is a popular AACTA Awards accredited independent awards-based film event held in the late Australian summer at the Byron Community & Cultural Centre, in the coastal town of Byron Bay. Coming Of Age
Coming of age is a young person's transition from being a child to being an adult. The specific age at which this transition takes place varies between societies, as does the nature of the change. It can be a simple legal convention or can be part of a ritual or spiritual event, as practiced by many societies. In the past, and in some societies today, such a change is associated with the age of sexual maturity ( puberty), especially menarche and spermarche. In others, it is associated with an age of religious responsibility.
