ZM ( ) is a New Zealand Contemporary hit radio radio network owned by New Zealand Media and Entertainment. It broadcasts to 31 markets throughout mainland New Zealand via terrestrial FM broadcasting, FM, and worldwide via the Internet. The network targets the 18–39 demographic specialises in a chart-music playlist of Pop music, pop, Modern rock, rock, Hip hop music, hip hop, Country music, country and Dance music, dance music. It reaches approximately 480,300 listeners weekly, making it the fifth largest commercial radio station in New Zealand. The ZM network was founded in the early 1970s as three separate commercial music stations owned by Radio New Zealand in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. 1ZM was a radio station in Auckland, New Zealand operated by Radio New Zealand and was originally part of the ZM group of stations and later became the very first Classic Hits station. Today this station is owned by New Zealand Media and Entertainment and is host station of The Hits network. History Early years The ZM name derives from the original 1ZM radio station founded by W.W. (Bill) Rodgers in the late 1920s in Manurewa, then a farming village south of Auckland. The original station broadcast on 1250AM. The station was later acquired by the NZ Government owned Radio New Zealand (which at the time was known as the National Broadcasting Board) and moved 26 km north to Auckland City, where it shared space in the 1941 Art Deco Broadcasting House studios of 1ZB. ZM Christchurch (previously 3ZM, Radio Nova, ZMFM and 91ZM) is a hit music radio station in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is a station of the ZM network, and is owned and operated by New Zealand Media and Entertainment. History Early years The ZM station in Christchurch has a history dating back to 1963 as local station 3ZM which originally broadcast on 1400AM. The station was started by the New Zealand government owned Radio New Zealand (which at the time was known as the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation). In 1973 3ZM was joined with 1YD Auckland and 2ZM in Wellington to form to youth orientated ZM network, 1YD became 1ZM. Classic Hits FM
The Hits is a Hot adult contemporary music radio network, broadcasting to 26 markets across New Zealand. It was set up by Government broadcaster Radio New Zealand in 1993 by consolidating existing stations into a single brand and has been privately owned since 1996. The Hits has had the broadest broadcast reach of any radio network in the country since 1996, and is now available on 40 full-power FM frequencies and 18 iHeartRadio streams. Most of the individual stations started out as local AM stations owned by state broadcaster Radio New Zealand. 89FM was a local FM radio station in Auckland between 1983 and 1993 and one of the first radio stations to broadcast on FM in both Auckland and New Zealand. The first FM station in New Zealand was Whakatane station, FM 90.7 in January 1982 but this station was only a temporary summer radio station. The other station to start around the same time as 89FM was Magic 91FM in Auckland. The station was originally branded as ''89 Stereo FM'' broadcasting on 89.4FM using the callsign 1ROQ. The station was based in Aetna House at 57 - 59 Symonds Street. In 1984 the station became part of Triple M and was rebranded as ''Triple M 89FM'' using the same logo and station imaging as the Triple M stations in Australia, all programming remained local, at the same time the stations callsign was changed to 1MMM. 91FM (originally known as Magic 91FM) was a local radio station in Auckland. 91FM began broadcasting on 91.0 FM using the call sign 1MJK in 1983 and was one of the first FM stations to start in Auckland and New Zealand, along with 89 Stereo FM. 91FM played Hit Music format similar to that of ZM and in the early nineties actually used the same "Rock of the Nineties" slogan used by 91ZM in Christchurch and ZMFM in Wellington.
