Yuma (Amtrak Station)
Yuma station is an Amtrak station at 281 South Gila Street in Yuma, Arizona, United States. Passenger rail service is provided thrice-weekly in each direction by the ''Sunset Limited'' and the ''Texas Eagle'' over this portion of its route. The station's island platform, which is adjacent to the station building site, are accessible through a short pedestrian tunnel. The former structure, the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot, was built in 1926 by the Southern Pacific Railroad. After SP ceased passenger operations upon Amtrak's start in 1971, the station housed the Yuma Fine Arts Museum. Marine Corps Air Station Yuma or MCAS Yuma is a United States Marine Corps air station in Arizona. It is the home of multiple squadrons of F-35B Lightning IIs of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron 1 (MAWTS-1), VMX-1, Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 1 (VMX-1) and VMFT-401, Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401 (VMFT-401), an air combat Aggressor squadron, adversary squadron of the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing of the Marine Corps Reserve. Yuma Subdivision
The Sunset Route is a main line of the Union Pacific Railroad running between Southern California and New Orleans, Louisiana. It is the southernmost railway that connects the central United States to the U.S. Pacific Coast. History The idea for this railroad dated before the American Civil War, as businessmen in the Southern United States wanted a direct connection to the Pacific Ocean. An island platform (also center platform (American English) or centre platform (British English)) is a station layout arrangement where a single platform is positioned between two tracks within a railway station, tram stop or transitway interchange. Island platforms are sometimes used between the opposite-direction tracks on twin-track route stations as they are cheaper and occupy less area than other arrangements. Sunset Limited
The ''Sunset Limited'' is a long-distance passenger train run by Amtrak, operating on a route between New Orleans and Los Angeles. Major stops include Houston, San Antonio and El Paso in Texas, as well as Tucson, Arizona. Opening in 1894 through the Southern Pacific Railroad, the ''Sunset Limited'' is the oldest continuously operating named train in the United States. With three round-trip journeys per week, the ''Sunset Limited'' is tied with the ''Cardinal'' for the lowest frequency of any regularly-scheduled Amtrak route. The ''Texas Eagle'' is a long-distance passenger train operated daily by Amtrak on a route between Chicago, Illinois, and San Antonio, Texas, with major stops in St. Louis, Little Rock, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Austin. Southern Pacific Railroad Depot (Yuma, Arizona)
The Southern Pacific Railroad Depot in Yuma, Arizona, was built as a Spanish Colonial Revival-style station by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1926. Routes that served the station include the ''Sunset Limited'', the '' Golden State'', and the '' Imperial''. After Southern Pacific Railroad ceased passenger operations upon Amtrak's start in 1971, the station housed the Yuma Fine Arts Museum. The depot was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The structure was razed in the summer of 1994 after a devastating fire damaged the building in the spring of 1993. It was delisted from the National Register in 2019. The location is now used for the Yuma Armed Forces Park. Amtrak passengers are now served at the Yuma Amtrak station which consists of two open platforms and a tunnel.
