Yorkshire West (European Parliament Constituency)
Yorkshire West was a European Parliament constituency covering the western parts of West Yorkshire in England, including Bradford and Halifax. Prior to its uniform adoption of proportional representation in 1999, the United Kingdom used first-past-the-post for the European elections in England, Scotland and Wales. The European Parliament constituencies used under that system were smaller than the later regional constituencies and only had one Member of the European Parliament each. When it was created in England in 1979, it consisted of the Westminster Parliament constituencies of Bradford North, Bradford South, Bradford West, Brighouse and Spenborough, Halifax, Keighley, Shipley and Sowerby. In 1984, Batley and Spen and Calder Valley replaced Brighouse and Spenborough, and Sowerby, but Batley and Spen was removed again in 1994. 1989 European Parliament Election In The United Kingdom
The 1989 European Parliament election, was the third European election to be held in the United Kingdom. It was held on 15 June. The electoral system was First-past-the-post voting in England, Scotland and Wales and Single transferable vote in Northern Ireland. The turnout was again the lowest in Europe. This election saw the best performance ever by the Green Party (UK) (formerly the Ecology Party), collecting over 2 million votes and 15% of the vote share. It had only received 70,853 as the Ecology Party in the previous election. However, because of the first past the post system, the Green Party did not gain a single MEP, while the Scottish National Party received 1 seat with only 3% of the vote share. The Green Party's vote total of 2,299,287 remains its best performance in a national election, as does its percentage result of 14.5%. Ian Bruce (politician)
Ian Cameron Bruce (born 14 March 1947) is a British Conservative party politician, who represented South Dorset in parliament from 1987 to 2001. Life and career He attended Chelmsford Technical High School and studied Electronics at the University of Bradford, then completed an HNC in Electronics at Mid-Essex Technical College. He was a student apprentice at Marconi in Chelmsford from 1965 to 1968, and for the next five years had work study roles at that company, Pye Unicam, Sainsbury's and BEPI (part of the Pye Group). From 1973 to 1975, he was a product manager at Sinclair. Having stood for the Labour seat of Burnley in 1983, he was narrowly defeated by Labour candidate Peter Pike. He was elected as the Conservative Party Member of Parliament for South Dorset in 1987. In 1997 he won the seat with a slim majority of 77 votes, but was defeated at the 2001 general election by Jim Knight. The 1984 European Parliament election was the second European election to be held in the United Kingdom. It was held on 14 June. The electoral system was First Past the Post in England, Scotland and Wales and Single transferable vote in Northern Ireland. The turnout was again the lowest in Europe. Rowland Winn, 4th Baron St Oswald
Rowland Denys Guy Winn, 4th Baron St Oswald, (19 September 1916 – 19 December 1984), was a British soldier and Conservative politician. Biography St Oswald was the eldest son of Rowland George Winn, 3rd Baron St Oswald, and his wife Eve Carew, daughter of Charles Greene. He was a major in the 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars and served in the Middle East from 1940 to 1944 and South-East Asia from 1944 to 1945 in the Second World War, where he was wounded and mentioned in dispatches. He later fought in the Korean War from 1950 to 1952 where he was awarded the Military Cross (MC). St Oswald succeeded his father in the barony in 1957 and took his seat on the Conservative benches in the House of Lords. The 1999 European Parliament election was the United Kingdom's part of the European Parliament election 1999. It was held on 10 June 1999. Following the European Parliamentary Elections Act 1999, it was the first European election to be held in the United Kingdom where the whole country used a system of proportional representation. In total, 87 Members of the European Parliament were elected from the United Kingdom across twelve new regional constituencies. The change in voting system resulted in significant changes in seats. The Conservatives won double the number of seats they had won in the previous European election, in 1994, while the Labour Party saw its seats reduced from 62 to 29. Barry Seal (politician)
Barry Herbert Seal (born 28 October 1937) is a British Labour Party politician who served in the European Parliament. Born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, Seal was educated at Heath Grammar School, the University of Bradford, and the European Business School in Fontainebleau. He worked as a chemical engineer, then as a computer consultant and lecturer. Seal became active in the Labour Party, serving on Bradford City Council from 1971 until 1979. At the October 1974 United Kingdom general election, he unsuccessfully contested Harrogate. He was Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the single-member seat of Yorkshire West from 1979 to 1999. He stood unsuccessfully for election to the new multi-member seat of Yorkshire and the Humber in the 1999 European elections. 1979 European Parliament Election In The United Kingdom
The 1979 European Parliament election, was the first European election to be held in the United Kingdom after the European Communities (EC) decided to directly elect representatives to the European Parliament. It was held on 7 June. Elections were also held in eight other EC states. European elections were incorporated into UK law by the European Assembly Elections Act 1978. Out of the 410 members of the European Parliament, 81 were elected from the UK. The electoral system was First past the post in England, Scotland and Wales (electing 78 MEPs in total) and Single Transferable Vote in Northern Ireland (electing 3 MEPs). Yorkshire and the Humber was a European Parliament constituency, constituency of the European Parliament.
