Yazidis In Germany
Yazidis in Germany may refer to people born in or residing in Germany of Yazidi origin, an ethnic group or Kurdish group who are strictly endogamous. There is a large Yazidi community in Germany, estimated to be numbering around 60,000 - 120,000 people. This makes the German Yazidi community one of the largest in the Yazidi diaspora. Immigration history Many Yazidis fled to Germany during the 1990s fearing religious persecution in Turkey. The Yazidi population of Germany was around 20,000 in 1998. Many Yazidi intellectuals also fled during this time and now play a prominent role in Yazidi diaspora affairs and maintain connections with Yazidis in Iraq. Political activism In August 2014, German Yazidis held protests against the Islamic State and called for an immediate end of the Genocide of Yazidis by ISIL. Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate ( ) is an 18th-century Neoclassical architecture, neoclassical monument in Berlin. One of the best-known landmarks of Germany, it was erected on the site of a former city gate that marked the start of the road from Berlin to Brandenburg an der Havel, the former capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg. Yazidi Diaspora
Yazidis, also spelled Yezidis (; ), are a Kurdish-speaking endogamous religious group indigenous to Kurdistan, a geographical region in Western Asia that includes parts of Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Iran. The majority of Yazidis remaining in the Middle East today live in Iraq, primarily in the governorates of Nineveh and Duhok. There is a disagreement among scholars and in Yazidi circles on whether the Yazidi people are a distinct ethnoreligious group or a religious sub-group of the Kurds, an Iranic ethnic group. Yazidism is the ethnic religion of the Yazidi people and is monotheistic in nature, having roots in a pre-Zoroastrian Iranic faith. Christianity is the largest religion in Germany. The Yazidi Academy () is a non-profit organisation and learned society based in Hanover, Germany. The organisation was founded in 2009, it concerns itself with the historical and current situation of the Yazidis. Since then, it has also published the German-language magazine ''Zeitschrift der Ezidischen Akademie. Forum für Diskussionsbeiträge zum Ezidentum''. It also hosts the Yazidi Library that had been established in 2007. The Yazidi Academy is a member of the network of migrants initiatives ''MiSO''. Nadia Murad
Nadia Murad Basee Taha (; ; born 10 March 1993) is an Iraqi-born Yazidi human rights activist based in Germany. In 2014, during the Yazidi genocide by the Islamic State, she was abducted from her hometown of Kocho in Iraq. Much of her community was massacred. After losing most of her family, Murad was held as an Islamic State sex slave for three months, alongside thousands of other Yazidi women and girls. Murad is the founder of Nadia's Initiative, a non-profit organization dedicated to "helping women and children victimized by genocide, mass atrocities, and human trafficking to heal and rebuild their lives and communities". Its establishment was prompted by the Sinjar massacre. Feleknas Uca
Feleknas Uca (born 17 September 1976) is a German politician of Kurdish Yazidi descent. From 1999 to 2009, she was member of the European Parliament from Germany, serving with Die Linke. Feleknas Uca was at one time the world's only Yazidi parliamentarian until the Iraqi legislature was elected in 2005. She is formerly HDP's Batman MP. Life and work Feleknas Uca was born in Celle, Lower Saxony, West Germany to an immigrant Yazidi family originally from southeastern Turkey. She graduated from Comprehensive School in Celle before taking an apprenticeship as a doctor's assistant, and completed her ''Abitur'' by distance learning.
