XXXIII Corps (British India)
The British Indian XXXIII Corps was a corps-sized formation of the Indian Army during the Second World War. It was disbanded and the headquarters was recreated as an Army headquarters in 1945. Formation The Corps was created at Bangalore in India on 15 August 1942. Its first commander was Lieutenant General Philip Christison. On 15 October 1943, Christison was transferred to command Indian XV Corps, which was then about to go into action in the Burma Campaign, and replaced as commander of XXXIII Corps by Lieutenant General Montagu Stopford. For much of its early history, the Corps was stationed in Southern India, preparing troops for several planned amphibious operations against the Japanese in the Indian Ocean. XXXIII Corps (India)
XXXIII Corps is a corps of the Indian Army. It draws some of its heritage from the British Indian XXXIII Corps which was formed in 1942, but disbanded in 1945. It was re-raised in 1960 at Shillong. The corps is headquartered in Sukna in North Bengal and is commanded by a Three Star officer of the rank of Lieutenant General titled General Officer Commanding (GOC). His chief of staff is a Two Star officer of the rank of Major General. The total troop strength of the XXXIII corps is estimated to be between 45,000 and 60,000 soldiers. History The XXXIII Corps Operating Signal Regiment was a part of XIV Army during World War II. The regiment moved to its present location along with the Corps HQ in 1962. It participated in the Indo-China war of 1962 and captured some Chinese communication equipment. The US XXXIII Corps (33rd Corps) was a 'Phantom Unit' created in 1944 as part of Fortitude South II. World War II The corps was first reported to the Germans as arriving in June 1944, disembarking at Liverpool and establishing its headquarters in Marbury, Cheshire, with the US 11th Infantry Division, US 48th Infantry Division and US 25th Armored Division under its command. In July the corps and the units under its command were reported as moving to take up positions vacated by US XX Corps as it departed for Normandy. XXXIII Army Corps (Wehrmacht)
German XXXIII. Corps (XXXIII. Armeekorps) was a corps in the German Army during World War II. History The Corps was first known as Höheres Kommando z.b.V. XXXIII (H.Kdo.) and was established on 18 October 1939 from the ''Border Guard Section Command 3'' ( Oppeln) after the end of the Polish campaign. It was initially deployed under the 6th Army on the Lower Rhine, but in March 1940 it was transferred to the Upper Rhine to Army Group C, where it was part of the 7th Army. Towards the end of the Battle of France, the Corps advanced with the 213th, 239th, 554th and 556th Infantry Divisions and captured Mulhouse. After the armistice with France, it was temporarily stationed in the Dijon area. In August 1940, the command was transferred to Central Norway, together with the Höheres Kommando z.b.V. XXXVI.
