Willington Athletic F.C.
Willington Athletic Football Club was an English football club based in Willington Quay, Northumberland. The team played at a ground next to Howdon railway station. History Willington Athletic was founded in 1888, and it joined the Northern Alliance in 1891–92. The club won that league's championship for the first time in 1899–1900, repeating the feat in 1904–05, 1905–06 and 1909–10. Its team first entered the FA Cup in 1891–92they lost to Shankhouse in the second qualifying round after a replayand entered each season until competitive football was abandoned for the duration of the First World War. In 1899–1900, they reached the fifth qualifying round, in which they lost to Jarrow, also after a replay. They won the Northumberland Senior Cup in 1896 and 1897. The Northern Football Alliance is a football league based in the North East, England. It has four divisions headed by the Premier Division, which sits at step 7 (or level 11) of the National League System. The top club in the Premier Division is eligible for promotion to the Northern League Division Two. The top clubs in the First, Second and Third Divisions are promoted to the Premier, First, and Second Divisions respectively. The bottom club in the Third Division may be relegated to either the North Northumberland League Division One, or the Tyneside Amateur League, depending on which is more geographically appropriate. Jarrow ( or ) is a town in South Tyneside in the county of Tyne and Wear, England. Historically in County Durham, it is on the south bank of the River Tyne, about from the east coast. Willington Quay Railway Station
Willington Quay was a railway station on the Riverside Branch, which ran between Byker and Willington Quay. The station served Willington Quay in North Tyneside. The station was opened to passengers on 1 May 1879 by the North Eastern Railway. It was situated adjacent to Armstrong Road off Howdon Lane. History The Newcastle and North Shields Railway received Royal Assent on 21 June 1836, with the line opening between Carliol Square and North Shields on 18 June 1839. It ran along the north bank of the River Tyne, although due to the meandering course of the river, it ran some distance from the shoreline at the eastern end. The branch line, which was designed to more closely follow the shoreline of the Tyne, serving the rapidly developing industries and communities, was authorised in 1871. Howdon Metro Station
Howdon is a Tyne and Wear Metro station, serving the suburb of Howdon, North Tyneside in Tyne and Wear, England. It joined the network on 14 November 1982, following the opening of the fourth phase of the network, between Tynemouth and St James via Wallsend. History The station was opened on 22 June 1839 by the Newcastle and North Shields Railway. This later became part of the North Tyneside Loop, served by the North Eastern Railway. On 1 December 1875, the station was renamed ''Howdon-on-Tyne'', to prevent it being confused with a station of a similar name station in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Following closure for conversion in the early 1980s, the station was demolished and almost entirely re-built. 1899–1900 FA Cup
The 1899–1900 FA Cup was the 29th staging of the world's oldest association football competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup (more usually known as the FA Cup), and the last to be held fully in the 19th century. The cup was won by Bury F.C., Bury, who defeated Southampton F.C., Southampton 4–0 in the 1900 FA Cup Final, final of the competition, played at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace in London. Matches were scheduled to be played at the stadium of the team named first on the date specified for each round, which was always a Saturday. If scores were level after 90 minutes had been played, a replay would take place at the stadium of the second-named team later the same week. A replay (also called a rematch) is the repetition of a match in many sports. Association football In association football, replays were often used to decide the winner in a knock-out tournament when the previous match ended in a draw, especially in finals. In 1970, FIFA (the worldwide governing body of the sport) and International Football Association Board, IFAB (the international rules committee for the sport) allowed Penalty shoot-out (association football), penalty shoot-outs to be held if a match ended in a draw after extra time.
