Wrongful Execution
Wrongful execution is a miscarriage of justice occurring when an innocent person is put to death by capital punishment. Opponents of capital punishment often cite cases of wrongful execution as arguments, while proponents argue that innocence concerns the credibility of the justice system as a whole and does not solely undermine the use of the death penalty. A variety of individuals are claimed to have been innocent victims of the death penalty. Newly available DNA evidence has allowed the exoneration and release of more than 20 death-row inmates since 1992 in the United States, but DNA evidence is available in only a fraction of capital cases. At least 190 people who were sentenced to death in the United States have been exonerated and released since 1973, with official misconduct and perjury/false accusation the leading causes of their wrongful convictions. Huugjilt
Huugjilt (; zh, first=s, s=呼格吉勒图, t=呼格吉勒圖, p=Hūgéjílètú, 21 September 1977 – 10 June 1996), also spelled Hugjiltu, was a Mongolian Chinese man who was wrongfully executed on 10 June 1996 for the rape and murder of a woman. On 5 December 2006, ten years after the execution, Zhao Zhihong wrote the ''Petition of My Death Penalty'', admitting he had committed the crime. Huugjilt was posthumously exonerated, and Zhao Zhihong was sentenced to death in 2015. ''Xinhua'' stated that the case was "one of the most notorious cases of judicial injustice in China in the recent decade." Huugjilt, a Chinese Mongol, had only a mononym, single name. Campden Wonder
The "Campden Wonder" is the name given to events surrounding the return of a man thought to have been murdered in the town of Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, England, in the 17th century. A family servant and the servant's mother and brother were hanged for killing their master, but following the man's return it became clear that no murder had taken place, despite the testimony of one of the accused. The story attracted popular attention in England in the years 1660–1662. Mary McCarthy, known as Moll Carthy (1902Bourke 1993, pp.6–7–20/21 November 1940), was a woman, mother, smallholder, possible sex worker, and murder victim from Marlhill, near New Inn, County Tipperary in Ireland. Henry "Harry" Gleeson (1903–23 April 1941) from Holycross, County Tipperary, was convicted of her murder and executed, but granted a posthumous pardon in 2015. Sir Edward Crosbie, 5th Baronet ( – 5 June 1798) was a Protestant gentleman executed in Carlow, Ireland, for alleged complicity in the United Irish Rebellion in May 1798. He was accused by the Crown authorities of being in command of the rebels and of addressing them from the steps of his house prior to their attack upon the barracks in Carlow. His innocence was protested by family and neighbours. Early life and education Crosbie was born in County Wicklow, likely at Crosbie Park, near Baltinglass. Zhao Zhihong (; 5 September 1972 – 30 July 2019), nicknamed The Smiling Killer and Demon, was a Chinese serial killer and rapist. He admitted to committing a total of 20 serious crimes between 1996 and 2005, including raping and killing eleven women in Ulanqab and Hohhot in Inner Mongolia.
