China Crisis
China Crisis are an English new wave and synth-pop band. They were formed in 1979 in Kirkby, near Liverpool, Merseyside with a core of lead vocalist and keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist Eddie Lundon. Initially a politically charged post-punk band influenced by Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes China Crisis soon crossed over to a more commercial sound and had success in the United Kingdom in the 1980s with ten Top 50 singles (four of them reached the Top 20) and three Top 40 albums (two entered the Top 20 and received a Gold certification). The Kent Music Report was a weekly record chart of Australian music singles and albums which was compiled by music enthusiast David Kent from May 1974 through to January 1999. The chart was re-branded the Australian Music Report (AMR) in July 1987. St Ives is a suburb on the Upper North Shore of Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia 18 kilometres north of the Sydney Central Business District in the local government area of Ku-ring-gai Council. The album spent 16 weeks on the UK Albums Chart, peaking at No. 20 in February 1984. It includes the song "Wishful Thinking", which was a Top 10 hit on the UK Singles Chart. Content and recording The songs "Wishful Thinking" and "Here Come a Raincloud" (then called "Watching the Rainclouds") were premiered on a BBC John Peel session in January 1983, along with "A Golden Handshake for Every Daughter", which was not included on the album but released as the B-side of the single "Tragedy and Mystery" in May. "Wishful Thinking" is a song by the English new wave band China Crisis, released as the third single from their second studio album ''Working with Fire and Steel – Possible Pop Songs Volume Two'' (1983). It reached No. 9 on the UK Singles Chart in early 1984, becoming their only top 10 hit single in their homeland. The song is their biggest and most well-known hit, and is included on numerous compilation albums. It was a top 20 hit in several European countries and hit number one on the Swedish radio chart ''Poporama'' on 8 March 1984.
