Women’s Network For Unity
The Women's Network for Unity (WNU) is a sex workers' organization in Cambodia which was established in 2000 and currently has about 6,400 members. It works against the stigmatization of sex work and lobbies for the legal and human rights of sex workers and for safer working conditions. Accordingly, the organization aims to amend the 2008 Law on Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation. The WNU was established by the Women's Agenda for Change (WAC) organisation that was founded by the Australian aid worker Rosanna Barbero. In 1999 several NGOs working on the issue of women's rights in development came together to discuss sex workers' rights with the aim of creating spaces and opportunities for sex workers to be at the forefront of the development agenda. Sex Worker
A sex worker is a person who provides sex work, either on a regular or occasional basis. The term is used in reference to those who work in all areas of the sex industry.Oxford English Dictionary, "sex worker" According to one view, sex work is voluntary "and is seen as the commercial exchange of sex for money or goods". Thus it differs from sexual exploitation, or the forcing of a person to commit sexual acts. Terminology The term "sex worker" was coined in 1978 by sex worker activist Carol Leigh. Its use became popularized after publication of the anthology, ''Sex Work: Writings By Women In The Sex Industry'' in 1987, edited by Frédérique Delacoste and Priscilla Alexander. The term "sex worker" has since spread into much wider use, including in academic publications, by NGOs and labor unions, and by governmental and intergovernmental agencies, such as the World Health Organization. Sex Work
Sex work is "the exchange of sexual services, performances, or products for material compensation. It includes activities of direct physical contact between buyers and sellers as well as indirect sexual stimulation". Sex work only refers to voluntary sexual transactions; thus, the term does not refer to human trafficking and other coerced or nonconsensual sexual transactions such as child prostitution. The transaction must take place between consenting adults of the legal age and mental capacity to consent and must take place without any methods of coercion, other than payment. The term emphasizes the labor and economic implications of this type of work. Furthermore, some prefer the use of the term because it grants more agency to the sellers of these services. A 2008 Cambodian Law on Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation has proven controversial, with international concerns regarding human rights abuses resulting from it, such as outlined in the 2010 Human Rights Watch report. Sex Worker Organizations
This is a list of sex worker organizations which advocate for sex workers' rights. Almost all sex worker organizations around the world favour the decriminalization of sex work, and have that goal as a primary objective. These organizations also encourage active involvement from sex workers to support advocacy, fundraising, and public education efforts. In locations where sex work is not criminalized, sex worker movements advocate for access to other kinds of rights such as unemployment, changes in zoning, and working to eliminate the social stigma attached to sexual labor.
