Women's Health Action And Mobilization
Women's Health Action and Mobilization (WHAM!) was an American activist organization based in New York City, established in 1989 in response to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in '' Webster v. Reproductive Health Services'' that states may bar the use of public money and public facilities for abortions. WHAM! started as the direct action committee of the Reproductive Rights Coalition, but soon broke away to form its own organization. WHAM! used direct action tactics such as draping the Statue of Liberty with two protest banners and disrupting the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court Justice David Souter. The first banner on the statue's crown said "No Choice, No Liberty" and the second banner hanging from the pedestal said "Abortion is Healthcare, Healthcare is a right." Tamiment, first known as Camp Tamiment, was an American resort located in the Pocono Mountains of Pike County, Pennsylvania, which existed from 1921 through 2005. Originally established by the Rand School of Social Science in New York City as a Socialist camp and summer school, Tamiment developed into a regular resort and later fell under private ownership. The Tamiment Playhouse entertained guests with weekly revues and served as a training ground for many prominent Broadway and TV performers and writers. Playhouse alumni have included Danny Kaye, Imogene Coca, Jerome Robbins, Carol Burnett, Woody Allen, Neil Simon, and many others. History In 1969 Jan Peterson moved to New York City and joined the Conselyea Street Block Association, which consisted of many local women from the Williamsburg and Greenpoint neighborhoods of Brooklyn. AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) is an international, grassroots political group working to end the AIDS pandemic. The group works to improve the lives of people with AIDS through direct action, medical research, treatment and advocacy, and working to change legislation and public policies.
